A real-time strategy (RTS) game is a type of computer strategy game which does not have "turns" like conventional turn-based strategy video or board games.
As the category grew, some RTS games, most notably Stronghold (1993), Myth (1997, which pioneered the use of 3D in real-time wargames, but was arguably not a true RTS), Homeworld and Warzone 2100 (both 1999), have attempted to break away from the 2D board-like view of Dune 2 and original Warcraft to richer 3D environments.

The turn of the Eighteen Century was quite a tricky time, with near-constant wars, invasions, and cut-throat diplomacy making for some pretty rapid changes in the international political and geographical landscape.
And on the international scale it's difficult to strike up relationships of any kind thanks to the huge amount of time and expense required to generate the requisite bargaining chips.
The balance of international power is pleasingly nebulous, but you've got to change the game speed every few minutes in order to cope, and even if you do manage to engage in battle, the units look dreadful and are difficult to control.

 Real-Time Strategy Games Reviews
Real-time strategy games are "real-time" in that all players, including the computer, move simultaneously - that is, they can move any and all units freely, as and when they like.
Diplomacy is more sophisticated too, and on the easier levels, if computer players think you're doing all right, one of them may well try to make an alliance with you, in return for some tribute from time to time.
They are strategic in that the strategies involve more than simply exploring and shooting: you have to manage resources, or consider the differing abilities of your units, or simply plan ahead for more than just which monster to kill next.

A Real Time Strategy Game (often abbreviated with RTS) is a game in which all of the players try to achieve a goal at the same time.
This is because the Pentium processor was the first processor that could handle a lot of units moving at the same time. Some well-known RTSs that were developed during that time are Dune II and Command and Conquer: Red Alert by Westwood.
This does not mean RTSs can't have more strategy than turn-based games, but the focus of each is different.
