  MediaCoder Audio Video Glossary
When RealAudio was introduced, RealNetworks disclosed no technical details about the audio format or how it was encoded, but it was soon noticed that some of the audio codecs used in RealAudio were identical to those used in cellular telephones and digital television.
RealAudio was developed as a streaming media format, meaning that it can be played while it is downloaded.
In this case, the RealAudio file is retrieved similarly to a normal web page, but playback begins as soon as the first part is received and continues while the rest of the file is downloaded.

 Codecs > RealAudio 10
RealAudio is 10 a complete audio solution that can satisfy the demands of the most discriminating audiophile to the most "bandwidth challenged".
RealAudio 10 accomplishes this by dividing original data from the audio spectrum into distinct frequency bands, some of which are perceptible by the human ear, many of which are not.
RealAudio 10 is backwards compatible with all RealAudio 8 decoders, enabling the widest possible reach across to millions of users and the last three generations of the RealPlayer.

 What is RealAudio?
RealAudio lets you start playing a sound as it is being transmitted; there is no need to download the entire file before listening to it.
RealAudio sound files are up to 10 times smaller than typical sound files.
It is possible to encode a RealAudio file so that it requires the listener to have only a 14.4 modem connection, or to encode it so that it requires a 28.8 connection.

RealAudio files can be linked to and embedded in the same way other sound files on your page can be.

RealAudio is a technology that allows Internet or Intranet broadcast of various audio forms in "real time." What makes RealAudio different from many other forms of information transfer over such networks is that the audio file can begin to play immediately, rather than after a large down load of data.
Progressive Networks, the developer of RealAudio, explain their technology as "streaming audio." What this means is that the RealAudio server receives the audio source, modifies it appropriately, and passes it on to the client in real time.
Some organizations use RealAudio's capabilities to provide audio services to their clients on a very select basis. This technology is also suitable for use within an Intranet system.

We believe that everyone vending RealAudio files over the Internet should do something like this; we think it is a mistake to assume that users either have, or know where to get and how to install, a RealAudio client.
Finally, we note that the RealAudio server is based on proprietary (or on as yet still unformalized) specifications, and on the assumption that people are using slow, mainly modem-based links.

If your RealAudio files are encoded to a single rate, and that rate is less than or equal to the data rate that a viewer's Internet connection can handle, the audio or video will actually stream automatically, without the necessity for you to buy, license, download, or configure a RealAudio/RealMedia server.
It means you can simply "drop in" RealAudio files easily, without having to worry about a separate server, and without your visitors having to wait until the entire file downloads before they can hear or see your content.
Be warned, however, that not using a direct RealMedia server means that a clever visitor will be able to bootleg your file by grabbing the content file out of their browser cache, or in numerous other ways.

OPTIMIZE RealAudio uses a lossy compression scheme, which means the codec discards parts of the audio file during the encoding process to shrink the file size.
Because RealAudio encoding reduces the dynamic range of your audio, adding a bit of compression beforehand will give you some control over the final signal levels rather than leaving them to chance.
