Realgar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Realgar is soft with a Mohs hardness of 1.5 to 2 and has a specific gravity of 3.5.
Realgar, orpiment, and arsenopyrite provide nearly all the world's supply of arsenic as a byproduct of smelting concentrates derived from these ores.
Realgar is also used by firework manufacturers to create the color white in fireworks, manufacturing shot, printing and dyeing calico, and depilating and tanning hides.

REALGAR - LoveToKnow Article on REALGAR
The name realgar is of Arabic origin, and was used /.
It is deposited by the solfataras near Naples and by the hot springs of the Yellowstone National Park.
Realgar has been used as a pigment and in pyrotechny for producing a brilliant white fire; but it is now replaced by the artificially prepared compound.

 Realgar light sensitivity
The alteration of realgar to pararealgar is dependent on the wavelength of the light to which the realgar is exposed, as determined from a number of experiments employing various types of filters.
This behavior is attributed to the absorption and transmission characteristics of realgar.
Realgar is most properly represented by the formula As This is a cage structure (sometimes referred to as a cradle structure) in which As atoms form a tetrahedron (also referred to as a bisphenoid) and a square of S atoms.

 Natural Mineral Pigments: Realgar
Realgar is red arsenic sulfide, usually described as orange red to orange yellow.
Excellent specimens of realgar were discovered in cavities of dolomite in Binnentale, Switzerland, and in calcite voids in Mercur, Utah, U.S. We obtain realgar from deposits in the Hunan province of China where it is found in large druses (cavities in a mineral filled with protruding crystals) of beautifully formed crystals.
Realgar is synthesized by heating orpiment to a temperature over 150°C or by sublimation of arsenic and sulfur.

Realgar is not an herb, but a mineral, comprised primarily of arsenic and sulphur.
Realgar has acrid, bitter, warm, and toxic characteristics, according to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, and is affiliated with the Heart, Liver and Stomach meridians.
Realgar is also available in pill, capsule and tablet form, and is sometimes incorporated with other substances into a larger formula.

 REALGAR (Arsenic Sulfide)
The arsenic atoms affect the structure altering it from sulfur's orthorhombic symmetry to realgar's monoclinic symmetry.
Realgar occurs in hydrothermal veins with valuable metal sulfide ores and its bright red color can be an aid to prospectors.
Other Characteristics: Realgar is unstable in light; specimens should be stored in complete darkness, rarely some specimens fluoresce under UV light and crystals are pleochroic between dark red and orange red.

When occurring in good specimens, realgar is relatively easy to recognize because of its bright red to orange-yellow color coupled with a resinous to greasy luster.
Realgar is monoclinic (2/m) and occurs in variably striated prismatic crystals that are reported to reach lengths of 12 cm.
Realgar is most frequently encountered in epithermal (near-surface, low-temperature) hydrothermal settings such as shallow veins, hot springs, and fumaroles.

Realgar is found in low-temperature thermal veins, usually in association with other arsenic (As) or antimony (Sb) minerals.
Realgar and orpiment were originally used as pigments but this practice was stopped because they are poisonous.

MFA - CAMEO - Material Description
Realgar occurs naturally in the Czech Republic, Romania, Macedonia, Japan, and the United States (Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, California) in ore veins that also contain orpiment.
Realgar, along with orpiment, was used in many early civilizations, such as Egyptian, Syrian, Persian, Indian, and Chinese.
However, realgar is not considered permanent because it reacts with copper as well as some lead pigments.

Gold that remained in the fluid and was not depleted during formation of AsÐrich pyrite also precipitated in the realgar- and orpiment-bearing and stibnite-bearing siliceous oreshoots and was accompanied by the replacement of calcite by quartz.
Realgar and orpiment precipitated at the lower temperatures, and eventually stibnite precipitated due to decrease in sulfur activity and temperature.
Leaching reactions were not important during development of the realgar- and orpiment-bearing and stibnite-bearing siliceous oreshoots and the mineralizing process was not chemically aggressive.

Cannon (1975) describes minor orpiment as accompanying realgar at its major occurrences in Washington, including the well-known locality in Green River Gorge north of Franklin, King County; the Alverson mine, Skagit County; and the American Arsenic and Bonanza Queen mines, Snohomish County.
Minor orpiment is reported from Kern (associated with stibnite and realgar in the economic borax deposits), Lake, Siskiyou, Sonoma, and Trinity Counties, California.

AC 2/98: Raman Microscopy Of A 13th-Century Illuminated Text
When the artist required an orange-red color, which could have been obtained by applying unaltered realgar, the pigment used was identified by Raman microscopy to be either plain vermilion or vermilion mixed with orpiment, as seen on the angel's cloak in Figure 1.
It is unlikely that, had natural realgar been applied to all 32 illuminations, each page would have been subjected to identical light conditions, and thus a similar degree of transformation to pararealgar for each illumination would not have occured.
Orpiment, realgar, and pararealgar apparently do not react with lead white, even though the pigments are adjacent to one another on many areas of the manuscript.

The third edition of Dana's System of Mineralogy (1855) is the first reference I can find to realgar's "altering on exposure to light to a mixture of orpiment and arsenolite." Although this is generally not true, the error has continued to be passed on to each successive edition, including the current eighth edition.
