| | REALIA Project Awarded National Endowment for the Humanities Grant |
 | | Launched in 2001, the REALIA Project (Rich Electronic Archive for Language Instruction Anywhere) offers a searchable database of over 1,000 images of different cultures from around the world, with cultural commentary and suggested pedagogical applications from faculty contributors. |
 | | The collection, which currently represents five languages (French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish), is carefully categorized and searchable by language, location and "realia type," which can be chosen from an extensive drop-down menu including everything from military life, to family life, to plants and animals. |
 | | The design of the collection and vision for the project is the work of a managing board made up of faculty, librarians and technologists from the three consortia, including Jeff Overholtzer, director of technology education at Washington and Lee University. |
