Reality Bites - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reality Bites is a 1994 film written by Helen Childress and featuring the directorial debut of Ben Stiller.
The plot is centered around Lelaina (played by Ryder), an aspiring videographer working on a documentary called Reality Bites about the disenfranchised lives of her friends and roommates (played by Hawke, Garofalo, and Zahn), and to a certain degree, about Lelaina herself.
Reality Bites is set in Houston, Texas (where the screenwriter's high school is located).

 Reality Bites
On the other level, it's a play on "sound bites" -- reality bites, I gather, are the MTV-style documentaries (like The Real World) that serve easily chewable morsels of "reality." Both meanings apply to the movie itself, which uses bites of reality to demonstrate that reality bites.
Reality Bites is the brainchild of two Gen-Xers -- director Ben Stiller and screenwriter Helen Childress, both making their feature debuts -- and boasts a cast full of them, including Stiller, who had his own variety show on Fox for about three seconds (enough time to snag an Emmy).
That has to be the final gruesome blow to Reality Bites: When you have an actress like Winona Ryder, who can connect with us so strongly that we practically consider her a sister, you don't set her up with a guy we wouldn't want marrying our sister.

Reality Bites, by The Plaid Adder - Democratic Underground
Maybe this is human beings who, whatever their politics may be, really believe in the work they are doing expressing real concern about what is liable to happen under an administration which is far more interested in realizing its own fantasies than in understanding reality.
Because when you think about it, the real hallmark of this administration is not its apparently limitless ability to manipulate perception but their utter impotence as regards reality.
We knew that the real war would have to be uglier, bloodier, and longer than the fantasy war that eventually played out on American television.

PBS grabbed 10 million viewers at the conclusion of the show (quite a feat for that time), which included the breakup of Bill and Pat Loud's marriage, and the coming-out of their son Lance.
Reality, as Webster tells us (not the little guy who says, "What 'chu talkin' 'bout!") is the state or quality of being real, which is genuine rather than imaginary, ideal, or fictitious.
But these real people are given commands like, "act natural" and "pretend the cameras aren't there," which are essentially acting instructions.

 Columns: Reality finally bites Bush
Early on, Bush decided that his administration would adopt a "perception equals reality" approach to governance and stick to that playbook regardless of what America's lying eyes saw: a "Healthy Forests" initiative that opened federal forests to aggressive logging, a "Clear Skies" proposal that allowed more mercury emissions and air pollution from coal plants.
I would say these "realities" have come crashing down, proving that gravity is a reality-based law of nature.
It was a natural disaster, which meant Bush couldn't don his flight suit and shake his fists at the "instruments of evil" who seek to destroy us.

The real game of survivor, however, is for those in the television industry who have faced shrinking audience numbers over the past few years.
If we focus only on the rhetoric surrounding this genre of programming or fall into the trap of simply demonizing the networks, we may be failing to see that reality TV is a symptom of a more serious problem: society’s gradual surrendering of its civility to the darker side of human nature.
Not only does reality TV satisfy a voyeuristic tendency in viewers, but when viewers see the contestants doing things they themselves are doing, or wishing they could do, it somehow justifies their own poor choices.

Most viewers realized it was just a gimmick and that these so-called reality shows were about as far from reality as you can possibly get without the aid of special effects and scripts.
However, perhaps the most disturbing trends in reality television have been the trivialization of love and capitalization on the concept of the battle of the sexes.
The deception as to how much Fox's "multimillionaire" actually had and how much of that was in real estate, as well as how quickly that marriage dissolved should have driven the point home.

Past Exhibitions | 1996 | Reality Bites: Realism in Contemporary Art
Reality is three-dimensional and exists in the fullness of time and space, yet the painting itself has a "reality" all its own.
This concept is clearly conveyed in René Magritte's famous painting of a pipe that is inscribed, in French, "this is not a pipe." The painting is not a pipe; it is a two-dimensional representation, and yet it exists on its own, as an object to be hung, collected, and preserved.
It is the complexity and ambiguity of real life as lived that most of the artists in Reality Bites are depicting.

But after the 9/11 connection, the elusive WMDs and the hinted Saddam-al-Qaeda connection turned out to be unviable as justifications, planting a democracy in Mesopotamia became the only justification the Bushies could offer with even a modicum of self-respect.
The U.S. troops would be welcomed with hosannas and flowers, the Iraqi people would quickly take advantage of the opportunity for self-rule and establish (perhaps with a few fits and starts, given that real democracies are always a bit messy) a working democracy.

A reality show featuring Mike Tyson could be announced in the coming weeks, according to a Hollywood TV show producer who says he's been having substantive negotiations with a major television network.
Stu Schreiberg, executive producer at Triage Entertainment, declined to comment on the specific network involved, but did say that over the last month the show's format has been finalized and, after surveying the TV landscape for interest, the suitor list is down to one network.
In an ESPNEWS poll conducted on Wednesday, many readers voted that Tyson's next career move after Saturday's fight in Memphis should be in a reality television show, instead of retiring, fighting Lennox Lewis or opening a tattoo parlor.
