ABC News: Reality TV Show Writers Want to Unionize   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
The WGA claims reality shows have become cash cows for the networks in large part because producers don't have to pay union wages and benefits.
The union says people who work on the shows are forced to put in long hours without days off and in some cases placed in dangerous conditions.
Unlike a sitcom or drama, a reality show doesn't often employ "writers." Instead, people with titles such a "field producer" or "story producer" make sure each episode follows a script that's often conceived in advance.

The show's success has led to a string of knock-offs and has ensured that reality programming is here to stay—at least until the next big thing comes along.
Indeed, the show that could be dubbed "Prostitution Island" is so morally corrupt that several advertisers, including Best Buy, Quaker Oats, and Sears, have pulled their commercials from the controversial and utterly entertaining show.
But the granddaddy of the reality TV genre is Candid Camera, which has been on television on and off since 1948 (yep, almost since the dawn of the medium itself).

From the instantly forgettable (does anybody still remember Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?) to the memorable and enduring (Survivor is closing in on its tenth season!), it's clear that reality TV is here to stay.
What's Cool About Reality TV Let's admit it, the best thing about reality shows is being able to watch normal people do things they would never do in real life.
Shows like Survivor or The Apprentice invite us to pick and choose who we want to root for (come on, nobody wanted to see Richard Hatch win on the first season of Survivor!), while shows like The Osbournes or Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica let us watch big celebrities do very stupid things.
