Scientific American: Virtual-Reality Therapy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
This form of therapy was introduced in the 1990s by Barbara O. Rothbaum of Emory University and Larry F. Hodges, now at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, for treating fear of heights, fear of flying in airplanes, fear of public speaking, and chronic post-traumatic stress disorder in Vietnam War veterans.
The final therapy sessions add tactile feedback to the virtual experience: a toy spider with an electromagnetic position sensor is suspended in front of the patient, allowing him or her to feel the furry object while touching the virtual spider with the cyberhand.
Although the progress of the therapy was gradual and systematic, the scenes presented by the software in the final sessions were gruesomely realistic, with images of people jumping from the burning buildings and the sounds of sirens and screams.

Reality Therapy holds as its basic premise the notion that regardless of what has happened to us in our lives, or what we have done in the past, we are living and making choices here and now.
The core of Reality Therapy is the idea that regardless of what has "happened" in our lives, or what we have done in the past, we can choose behaviours that will help us meet our needs more effectively in the future.

Reality Therapy continues to grow in the UK due to its wide applicability, its highly practical and interactive methodology and its actual "track record" in counselling, coaching, managing and helping people.
Additionally, Reality therapy has (since the early 1970s) proven itself to be a highly effective approach to addictions counselling and has been a successful complement to treatment programmes in several countries around the world as well as in the UK.
Although Reality Therapy is a "needs focused" rather than a "problem focused" approach (ie it goes beyond just the presenting problem) it is nevertheless highly applicable to shorter term counselling, although it is, most certainly not limited to such.

Exposure therapy is a clinical treatment based on gradually and systematically exposing the phobic person to the feared object or situation a little at a time, starting very slowly, and calming them.
With in vivo (in life) exposure therapy, under a therapist's supervision and guidance, rather than avoiding it, the phobic slowly approaches the thing they are afraid of in the real world...the phobics initially display a rapid increase in anxiety, but if they hold their ground instead of fleeing, their fear and anxiety will actually habituate.

 WHAT IS REALITY THERAPY?
One of the core principles of Reality Therapy is that, whether we are aware of it or not, we are all the time acting to meet these needs.
Practitioners of Reality Therapy also visit the past but probably to a lesser extent than those who use other therapies - this is not a criticism of those who use other therapies, it is simply a way in which Reality Therapy is different.
The focus of the practitioner of Reality Therapy is to learn what needs to be learned about the past but to move as quickly as feasible to empowering the client to satisfy his or her needs and wants in the present and in the future.

The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal
Reality Counseling imposes on student-athletes a “hardball” approach where, in the counseling process, a specifically chosen behavior or action plan, once identified, must be followed by an assessment step to identify consequences and make subsequent value judgments regarding the efficacy of that chosen behavior.
Reality Counseling and Choice Theory display similarities and congruence with Ellis's rational-emotive behavioral theory where internal locus of control is equivalent to center focus, and Adlerian psychology, which advances the theory that people want to fit in with their social peers and be accepted (Howatt, 2001).
Mentors using Reality Counseling can help lead student-athletes to take charge of their well-being by accepting that they are also in control of their behaviors and they can make choices to learn new ways to improve their present circumstances.

Reality therapy is Dr. Glasser’s counseling approach using choice theory.
Within reality therapy, there is much emphasis on a person learning to develop a strong internal locus of control (i.e., belief that one can attain desired results through one’s choices) and a strong sense of responsibility for one’s behavior.
Importantly, like CBT, a main goal in reality therapy is to aid clients in gaining new perspectives and techniques that will help them to manage challenges on their own.

Lately I have had occasion to think about just what reality therapy really is. So far I have come up with three answers.
In this, part of the therapy is to learn to be open to the idea that reality may be much bigger, more interesting, and more mysterious than most of the authority figures of the mundane world would have us believe.
And really, the first type is just the universe trying to get our attention so that we will open up and voluntarily accept the assistance that is so readily available to us.

Psychovisual Therapy -- State of the Art: part 2
Reality therapy was devised by William Glasser, a psychiatrist, in the 1950's and 60's.
Like most founders of schools of therapy, Glasser believes his schema to be universally applicable; that it can resolve behaviour troubles of all kinds, (including drug and alcohol dilemmas), and is helpful for people of all ages.
Reality therapy completely denies this theory and says nothing we do, feel, or think is reaction to external events.

During the therapy, some of the subjects touched a realistic model of a large spider while grasping a virtual one.

The participants were then randomly assigned to three groups: one that received VR therapy alone, one that received VR therapy with the addition of touch, and one that received no therapy at all.

An experimental therapy based on virtual reality (VR) computer simulations has helped persons with acroophobia reduce their fear of heights, a team of computer scientists and clinical psychologists reports in the April issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Hodges said that although the virtual situation created real anxiety and distress in the test subjects, the levels may not have been as intense as if the subjects had been on a real bridge, balcony or elevator.
"Virtual reality graded exposure may turn out to be much more time- and cost-effective than traditional exposure therapy, which requires the therapist to leave the office setting and work with patients in anxiety-producing height situations," noted Rothbaum.

Past Reality Integration Therapy of Ingeborg Bosch
Past Reality Integration (PRI) therapy is based on the idea that we all have a divided consciousness: one part of our consciousness sees the world through the eyes of the child we once were, and feels accordingly.
PRI therapy also encourages clients to change those behaviors (often ingrained and incorrectly considered to be part of one's nature and personality) that support the denial of the past reality.
When we are aware of what the old repressed reality looked like in general and we know (on an emotional level) what that would have felt like, it is not necessary anymore to experience the same old pain over and over again every time a Symbol is confronted.
