Reality tunnel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reality tunnel is a term coined by Timothy Leary and popularised by Robert Anton Wilson.
It refers to the concept that with a subconscious set of filters formed from their beliefs and experiences, everyone interprets this same world differently, hence "Truth is in the eye of the beholder".
While it seems most people take their beliefs to correspond to the "one true objective reality," Robert Anton Wilson emphasizes that each person's reality tunnel is their own artistic creation, whether they realize it or not.

"Reality" is a word in the English language which happens to be (a) a noun and (b) singular.
The notion that "reality" is a noun, a solid thing like a brick or a baseball bat, derives from the evolutionary fact that our nervous systems normally organize the dance of energy into such block-like "things," probably as instant bio-survival cues.
The notion that "reality" is singular, like a hermetically sealed jar, does not jibe with current scientific findings which, in this century, suggest that "reality" may better be considered as flowing and meandering, like a river, or interacting, like a dance or evolving, like life itself.

When the Tunnels (and explorers) had been exhausted, a chapbook was compiled as a verbal travelogue, describing the scenery and landscape of the psychic spaces previously little explored, mapping cogent symbols, suggesting formulae to work, and powers to be gained, and warning of symptoms of unbalanced energies relating to each Tunnel's psychic web.
And so there are many Tunnel images yet to be earthed, more maps, new angles, fresh descriptions of the psychic space yet to be wrought before we, the human race, succeed in bringing about a willed mutation of the species that will propel us to the Comity of Stars.

 Reality Maps and Fundamentalism
Our core beliefs define our relationship to reality — our place in the world — which is why they are difficult to change (most hardly change their core beliefs over a lifetime).
There is a natural propensity in every fundamentalist to spread his or her delusion; the fundamentalist is driven to stamp out any threat to his or her reality, because that reality defines the self (here, the map is the territory).
This requires an understanding of reality maps and exposure to belief systems different from our own, so that we realize that what we believe about the world is just that — a belief system.
