Tolkien, Arda is the name given to the Earth in a period of fictional prehistory, wherein the places mentioned in The Lord of the Rings and related material once existed.
Originally the Earth (Arda) was flat, the continents were surrounded by a mighty ocean (or perhaps by space), Ekkaia or Vaiya, the Encircling Sea, and separated by Belegaer, called the Great Sea and the Sundering Seas.
The word "Arda" was apparently conceived as a cognate of English "Earth" and its equivalents in the other Germanic languages (such as Dutch aard, German Erde), although it ostensibly has no relation, being a Quenya word.

 Arda - Tolkien Gateway
Arda (Quenya 'The Realm') is derived from Valarin Aþâraphelûn, is the world in which all of the events occur, including the continents of Middle-earth and Aman.
Arda Marred (Valarin Aþâraphelûn Dušamanûðân; Arda Hastaina in Quenya) is a term referring to the world as it now is, stained by the evil of Melkor.
Arda Marred also broke the design of Elvish immortality: in Arda Marred Elves slowly fade, until at last they are little more than wraiths.

Arda - The Lord of the Rings Wiki
Arda was the world on which humans, elves, dwarfs and hobbits live, including the continents of Middle-earth and Aman.
Tolkien stated many times that Arda was our world in a fictional time, so we can interpret the known regions of Middle-earth as Europe, perhaps specifically the Mediterranean (Mediterraneus is Latin for "Middle-earth").
Arda is made round and new lands are created east of Middle-Earth (and west too, now that the world is round and can be circumnavigated), out of these Sun Lands that are apparently meant to be North and South America, though none of Tolkien's mythology deals with what happens there.

This lies a long way in the future, though; if the regions of Eä are vast beyond the thought of Elves and Men, so too are the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
About The Encyclopedia of Arda First, it needs to be emphasised that the site is nowhere near completion, and will probably never achieve this.

 Arda - Major Regions
As the mid-point of any journey from Khitai to Tashim Selentia, Batubatan is in many ways the centre of Arda: the mountain called Ardamana (Navel of the World), where Duryadhi the Revealer discovered the Aujuna understanding of the True Faith while in mourning for her husband, can be found in western Durpar.
Gatanades the Saviour established the True Faith during the heyday of the Empire, and Selentia overshadows even Batubatan as the region of Arda with the greatest concentration of believers in the True God.
While some of the ancient gods continue to live on their mountains and in their underground domains, they are no longer a part of the world that lies between their realms: it is the True Faith of Gatanades and of Akabah the Illuminate that dominates the Selentine kingdoms.

Tolkien's great mythological tales of Middle-earth are meant to be taken, fictitiously, as an ancient history of the Earth, particularly of Europe, from several thousand years before the lands took their present shape.
This because Aman was removed from Arda, and the Eastlands were unknown, and thus 'Middle-earth' was the only known part of the world.
For instance, the Encyclopedia of Arda considers only The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion to be canonical.
