THE immediate cause of the exodus of Reangs to Tripura was violent clashes in the Mamith subdivision, a Reang-dominated area in northwest Mizoram, after the BNU raised the demand for an ADC.
Reangs, one of the Tripuri clans, are considered to be the original inhabitants of Mizoram as the State was part of the Tripura kingdom until 1872, Shyma Charan said, quoting from a document.

In a recent statement, Mizoram home minister T. Thanga said the entire state would have to be declared a disturbed area if the Reang refugees are allowed to exercise their franchise.

 750 Bru militants may surrender in Mizoram
The Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) is an armed outfit of the Reangs and is currently engaged in negotiations with Mizoram government.
The immediate cause of the conflict was the demand for an Autonomous District Council (ADC) by the Bru National Union (BNU), a political organisation of Reangs that was formed in year 1994.
The BNU anchored its demand in the presence of a majority of Reangs in the sub-division, and declared that their rights-political, economic and cultural among others-were not justifiably protected under the prevailing political arrangement.

In October 1997, the Mizo Zirla Pawl sharply reacted to this demand from the Reangs.
However, for reasons best known to them, some members of the Reang community ''spread words of panic.'' In fact, before the MZP expressed its reaction, some Reang families prepared to migrate by disposing of their properties.
It was ascertained that in October last, members of the BNLF visited some Reang villages in Aizawl district and ''threatened'' them to leave Mizoram immediately, stating that they were going to attack the Mizoram police force.

February: More than 12,000 Reang are now reported to have fled Mizoram to Tripura due to clashes between the Mizos and Reangs (Statesman, 02/26/98).
Few of the Reang refugees in Tripura have returned to Mizoram and they report that some Mizos have raped and murdered their tribal kin.
The Reangs reportedly want an autonomous district council, compensation for those whose property was destroyed over the past year, inclusion of Reangs in voters= lists, and the reservation of three state assembly seats.

The Bru National Liberation Front, a Reang outfit, is ostensibly preparing to step up pressure on the Mizoram government for granting autonomy to the minority Reang tribesmen in the state.

The terming of the Reangs as “foreigners” by the Chief Minister of Mizoram exposes that the State Government has no intention to accord them the right to participate in the Assembly Elections.
The denial of the right to participate in the Government to the Reangs would a set a bad precedence where a large number of populations could be driven away by interested parties to ensure that they are not allowed to take part in the elections.
The NHRC must intervene to not only ensure that the Reangs could participate in the Government but also to ensure that denial of the right to participate in the Government does not set a bad precedence and similar ethnic conflicts starts in many parts of North East India.

The Brus or Reangs are said to have entered Mizoram around 1954 from the Maian hills in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).

The return of the Brus, also known as the Reangs, appears to have ended with the return of 273 Brus consisting of the BNLF cadres and their family members.

The MAP personnel and YMA activists had warned Reangs living in the Jampui hills of Tripura?s Kanchanpur subdivision of fresh attacks if abducted engineer Charanjit Singh and labourer Zoramsanga were not released by August 25.
The MAP and YMA also demanded unconditional release of two Mizo youths, Lalzuama and Zominthanga, being held in police custody in Dharmanagar subdivision on charges of riots against the Reangs, and threatened to drive away all Reangs from Mizoram if their demands were not met.
Realising the gravity of the situation, North Tripura district magistrate Debatosh Dutta deputed the deputy inspector-general of North district and superintendent of police G.S. Rao to the Reang-dominated villages.
