  Reap The Wild Wind
Family entertainment is still a mostly untapped domain, and when “Reap The Wild Wind” landed on my desk for review, I gladly accepted, knowing that this is one of those great and adventurous films, I loved to watch on TV on rainy Sunday afternoons when I was a kid.
It certainly gives us an idea what Scarlett O’Hara could have looked like in her interpretation of “Gone With The Wind” the character of Loxi is not far removed from Scarlett’s, and actress Paulette Goddard was originally slated to play the part of the headstrong Miss Scarlett in the all-time classic film.
“Reap The Wild Wind” is one of those great examples where the color scheme adds enormously to the melodrama played off on screen.

But for me, it is far easier to side with folks who like "Reap the Wild Wind" as a prime example of rousing old-fashioned screen storytelling at its best.
Preston is given the task of uttering one of the film's most unforgettable lines when arriving at a prearranged meeting with his girl friend (a very young Susan Hayward) that may never EVER have been topped as a "groaner.".
Special mention should be made of the beautiful Technicolor employed in "Reap the Wild Wind", the engrossing special effects (outstanding for their time) and the exciting musical score written by Victor Young.

Cecil B. de Mille's typically lavish tale of wrecks and wreckers, Reap the Wild Wind, stars Paulette Godard, Ray Milland, John Wayne and that giant squid.
Godard gets to play a Southern belle the way she'd have probably played Scarlett O'Hara had she got it, so we all had a lucky escape there, while Raymond Massey provides the fl-hearted villainy as he lures the Duke's honest skipper onto the reefs in more ways than one.
It's like Gone with the Wind on the open sea, with the high-spirited Goddard (who had been a candidate for the role of Scarlett O'Hara) holding her own with her chest-thumping costars.

Susan Hayward - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She went to Hollywood in 1937, aiming to become the unknown who won the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind.
Although she didn't get that role, Hayward landed a few bit parts until she eventually landed the female lead in Beau Geste (1939) opposite Gary Cooper which made her a superstar.
During the war years, she played leading lady to John Wayne twice in Reap the Wild Wind and The Fighting Seabees.

John Wayne was in the early stages of superstardom when this lavish Cecil B. DeMille adventure was produced in 1942, so it's interesting to see the Duke in a heroic supporting role as opposed to the commanding one.
It's like Gone with the Wind on the open sea, with the high-spirited Goddard (who had been a candidate for the role of Scarlett O'Hara) holding her own with her chest-thumping costars.
Of course this leads to corrupt practices where ship captains are bribed to deliberately wreck their ships on the shoals in exchange for something on the side.

Here's a cool Wired magazine article on using computer models to estimate the wind power potential of a particular location.
Before the development and refinement of such modeling, those wanting to know how much power potential they have would have to use an anemometer over a whole year to account for seasonality.
Now they can make their assessments of the economic viability of a wind turbine much more quickly, using computer modeling.

Reap the Wild Wind will not appeal to everyone, but it should attract collectors, browsers, and anyone who just likes old fashioned, high-spirited hokum.
However, the film’s climactic scene involving Milland and Wayne in an underwater battle with a giant squid is pretty effective, regardless, and one can readily see why the picture won an Oscar for its special effects.
My first and only previous viewing of "Reap the Wild Wind" was in the early sixties on an old nineteen-inch, fl-and-white television.

Similar in plot to both Union Pacific and North West Mounted Police, with a pair of rivals vying for the leading lady, Reap the Wild Wind is DeMille's most successful variation on this theme-primarily because of casting.
However, in Reap the Wild Wind, with a choice between Ray Milland and John Wayne, there is at least a reasonable possibility that Paulette Goddard could go either way.
As he had throughout his career, DeMille continued to seek out and support young talent, and although Susan Hayward had been in films since 1937, her presence in a DeMille picture was the impetus needed to launch her starring career.
