Topic: Reaper (novel)

  rpr -
Dredd, a novel effector of the apoptosis activators reaper, grim, and hid in Drosophila.
Reaper- or Grim- induced apoptosis was inhibited by a broad range of caspase inhibitors and by human inhibitor of apoptosis proteins cIAP1 and cIAP2.
We show here that ecdysone-induced expression of the death activator genes reaper (rpr) and head involution defective (hid) is required for destruction of the larval midgut and salivary glands during metamorphosis, with hid playing a primary role in the salivary glands and rpr and hid acting in a redundant manner in the midguts.

 Researchers solve killer protein's 'crime'
This is the job of the Reaper family of proteins, which includes Reaper, Hid and Grim, and which Steller discovered in 1994.
In the past, scientists could not easily study the effects of Reaper in developing fly embryos because overproduction of this protein leads to their death.
Because Reaper itself is a very small protein, they think that it will be possible to design small therapeutic derivatives of it that could readily pass into tumor cells.

Scythe: a novel reaper-binding apoptotic regulator
These findings established reaper as a key regulator of apoptosis in flies, and genetic data places reaper upstream of caspase activation, although the molecular intermediates between reaper and caspase activation have not been elucidated.
Since reaper is a small protein without obvious catalytic activity, we hypothesized that it might act through direct interaction with downstream apoptotic effectors.
By analogy to reaper, such a Scythe-activating factor might be transcriptionally induced in response to external stimuli or in response to developmental cues.

At that time, grain was harvested by the same manual process that had been used since the dawn of agriculture: the reapers mowed down the standing grain with a hand-swung scythe, and the binders followed behind them, tying the crop into bales, which were then carted away, usually for storage in barns.

The very concept of the novel is bizarre; that Death could get fed up of his job and go off to do something different, like everyone else.
Inevitably, the consequences of having the position of Death in the 'Situations Vacant' column, are amusing to say the least; but one 130-year old wizard (supposed to be dead) really does have the time of his life.
The characterisation of Death was excellent, and the other characters in the novel are used in an intricate way to aid his development.

This first novel was followed up by "Reaper," a joyride of a "techno-thriller" in which the world is threatened by "The Big Turn-On" – an event in which nearly every resident in America will gain access to the Information Superhighway.
Unfortunately, several parties are using The Big Turn On for their own villainous ends, and it's up to a surgeon-turned-paramedic and a beautiful government scientist to pin down the cause of a rash of mysterious deaths, stop the bad guys, and save the world.
Between "Reaper" and "Skin," Mezrich has also found time to write "Skeptic" under the pen name Holden Scott – a feverish yarn about a murdered man's ghost, the victim's unwilling-to-believe best friend, and – oh, yeah – a complex international intrigue.
