Rear Engine Cars - Home Page
Back in the 1930s, rear engine cars were considered the wave of the future.
Great automotive engineers like Hans Ledwinka and Ferdinand Porsche believed that, by putting the power-train in back of the rear axle, cars could be made lower, lighter, cooler, safer, roomier, cheaper, more aerodynamic, better riding and better handling.
Note that the engine is aft of the rear axle.

  Engine Removal Procedure
Continue raising the front and rear of the car until it has been raised high enough for the fan shroud to clear the lowest point under the rear of the car as the engine is pulled out (resting on the creeper)--about 28 inches.
With the engine supported by the jack with a piece of 2x4 under the oil sump, remove the four nuts/bolts that connect the engine to the transaxle.
This may be useful if you are leaving the rear engine bay sealing rubber in place, as the rim of the pulley wheel tends to catch on the rubber as the engine is lowered.

 FA Club
Rear wheel drive layout such as this suffers from developmental challenges as having to mount the engine longitudinally, along with a transmission and driveshaft that cuts into usable cabin space.
Because having the engine in the middle of the chassis essentially cuts the usable space in the middle, thus the driver and passenger must sit in front of the engine and it reduces the amount of space for passengers.
Another advantage for rear wheel driven cars, is that since the steering wheels do not share power delivering duties, there’s no “torque steer” where the power of the engine forces the drive wheel to “steer” due to the change in torque as you accelerate.

 Rear wheel drive - Wikicars
RWD typically places the engine in the front of the vehicle, but the mid engine and rear engine layouts are also used.
The vast majority of rear wheel drive vehicles use a longitudinally-mounted engine in the front of the vehicle, driving the rear wheels via a driveshaft linked via a differential between the rear axles.
Rear wheel drive has fallen out of favor in passenger cars since the 1980s, due in part to higher manufacturing costs, and a perception by many car buyers that front wheel drive is safer, and that it performs better on slippery roads.

As any engine builder can tell you, running 3 degrees too much high rpm advance on a race engine is a guaranteed way to seize (or hole) a piston.
While those old 580s may not be considered muscle boats, their engines generated lots of power per cc, the pumps hooked up great, and the hull could hold turns at full speed.
We suspect these plates were used to slightly retard the rear cylinder firing of some "tour" engines that were dancing on the edge of the reliability envelope.

Too often thousands of dollars are spent on engines which will never realize their full potential because no consideration was given to the optimum RPM range of the engine, the transmission gearing, the rear end gearing, or the correct tire size to keep the engine in that range.
To minimize turbo lag, it is imperative that the turbine and the compressor are properly matched to the engine as well as the engine being properly matched to the transmission gears, the ring and pinion gears, and the tires.
Obviously a 50 horse power engine will need a lot higher ratio than a 500 horse power engine to break traction with the same size tire.....that is one of the things you have to take into consideration when selecting the ring and pinion ratio.

 Rear-wheel drive at AllExperts
* Better handling in dry conditions - accelerating force is applied to the rear wheels, on which the down force increases, due to load transfer in acceleration, making the rear tires better able to take simultaneous acceleration and curving than the front tires.
* Less costly and easier maintenance - Rear wheel drive is mechanically simpler and typically does not involve packing as many parts into as small a space as does front wheel drive, thus requiring less disassembly or specialized tools in order to replace parts.
* Towing - Rear wheel drive puts the wheels which are pulling the load closer to the point where a trailer articulates, helping steering, especially for large loads.

Torn engine mounts are characterized by unpleasant engine vibrations, excessive wheel hopping during aggressive launch, and missed shifts that can ruin your transmission.
Because we have a transverse mount engine, most of the stress and load excursions are experienced by the front and rear mounts, these are by far the two most important mounts and exhibit wear much sooner than any of the other mounts.
