  The Rear Suspension
VW rear suspensions sometimes sag as the car ages, especially if it has carried a few large loads.
The spring plate is 'twisted' as the suspension moves through an arc (swing axle models), so you'll see it 'untwist' as you undo these bolts.
You should then be able to manouver the whole axle towards the rear of the car, free of the spring plate, without loosening any of the brake lines etc. You might need to tie it back clear of the spring plate.

The rear suspension of the 63 to 82 Corvette was revolutionary for its time.
Independent rear suspension and a limited slip differential all wraped in a fiberglass shell.
Rear trailing arm service includes full disassembly of the arm, reconditioning or replacement of the components (caliper mounting bracket, bearing housing, brake backing plate and spindle), if the arm is in need of repair that is done at this time.

 Late Model Mustang Suspension Basics
This suspension is compact, cheap to build and easy to service, but it is often criticized because (a) its geometry produces camber changes during vertical suspension movement and body roll that adversely affect handling and (b) the strut towers prevent designers from lowering the car's profile.
The performance of the front suspension can be improved by installing stiffer springs and struts and by replacing rubber bushings in several locations with less compliant urethane bushings.
Another approach is to install stiff springs and struts that limit the suspension's travel to a very narrow range in which camber change is insignificant.

The rear suspension swing arms or "bogies" mount to a box which attaches to the frame rail.
In addition, the suspension alignment should be checked after the bogies are reinstalled as it is unlikely that the geometry between the old and new pins and bushings will be identical.

 Paralever rear suspension
This is a "Four-bar" linkage, similar to double-wishbone suspension in cars which keeps the rear drive at a contant angle as the suspension moves.
This torque-induced suspension movement, sometimes called "the shaft effect" or "shaft jacking" is considered to be a drawback to traditional shaft-drive designs.
The suspension travel exists to absorb irregularities in the surface; it should normally stay in the intended region of that travel so as to be ready to absorb whatever bumps or dips the designer anticipated.

Also, Maier have these springs that are layered toward the front to stiffen them like having caltracs, but it makes it look flimsy as suspension, as the rear half of the spring is longer, and has less leafs on it.
You want the panhard to be as long as possible, because the you will notice the arc that the panhard forces the rear end to travel when the rear suspension moves up and down.
The reason these cars came from the factory without a rear sway bar, is it is generally believed an understeering car is safer for the general driving public.

Some manufacturers still use a rigid rear axle, either in association with semi-elliptical leaf springs or mounted with coil springs and longitudinal rods, plus a "Panhard bar" for lateral guidance.
Some front wheel drive systems which retain the rigid rear axle use a simple tube with two semi-elliptical leaf springs, or an axle supported on coil springs and guide rods.
In this elegant system, the driving wheels are mounted on properly guided rigid triangles, while the "suspended" differential is fixed to the chassis.

EM Rear Suspension Ideas   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Since the Devin C uses primarily standard EM rear suspension, but with slightly shorter axles, it may work for the EM car rear suspension, but is currently unproven.
These two changes do wonders for reduction of rear wheel jacking, at least for the Devin C. For the EM Corvairs, the wheel jacking problem is less severe, surprisingly over the Devin C, because the axles are longer for the EM Corvair car, and even longer for the FC.
