Corvette Forum - Front-mid-engine layout vs. rear-mid-engine layout?
Such a design - front engine/rear transaxle - is the best design compromise for a sports/GT layout when you consider occupant comfort and luggage capacity, especially if the engine is set back so the front of the engine is at the front axle line.
Dave McL in "Corvettes from the Inside" appears to be a Mid Rear man. He claims that GM ran some studies showing that the Mid Rear design would be 100 lbs lighter than the equivalent mid front.
Apparently GM was listening too, or came to the same conclusion, because the C5/6 are a "front mid engine/rear transmission" architecture, and they are both very fast and amazingly forgiving, even with the active handling disabled.

 MR layout
In Automobile design, an MR or Mid-engine, Rear wheel drive layout drives the rear wheels with an engine placed just in front of them, behind the passenger compartment.
In contrast to the rear-engined RR layout the center of gravity of the engine is in front of the rear axle.
This layout is typically chosen for its near-ideal weight distribution.

CycleForums Archive - Why is mid engine so great?
However, most mid or rear-engine cars do not have 50/50 distribution, and the weight in the back contributes to momentum.......meaning that the rear end wants to keep going straight when you want to turn.
The advantage of the mid-engine design for sports cars is its "low polar moment of inertia".
He's refering to front engine, rear transmission (C5/924-968/928 style) where the weight is still roughly 50/50.

 Rear Engine Classics: Rockin' Cars
The design of the roadster was not unlike the 'Radclyffe Roadster', with similar hood and side windows, the rear engine cover however was a hand formed panel and not a converted front bonnet as was the Radclyffe version.
The engine was an air-cooled flat-four also based on the NSU design.
In 1936 steel bodies mounted over all-steel floorpans were used, powered by a 984cc, 22bhp engine that could reach a top speed of around 65 mph.

 F50 Chassis
In the F50, the engine is part of the chassis structure; the front portion of the car is attached to the front of the engine and the rear suspension and transmission is attached to the rear of the engine.
Since engine block strength is critical with this design approach, it is made of nodular cast iron as opposed to aluminum.
As with many race and high performance road cars, the F50 is a mid-engine design.

This is a design in which the engine lies in between the front and rear axles, usually just behind the passenger compartment.
A transmission specially designed by Ricardo is getting the power to the rear wheels.
The engine is mounted to a chrome-moly frame, a steel alloy made of chromium and molybdenum originally developed for use in high-temperature environments within power plants.

Mid-Engine cars in 1:64 scale diecast
The merits of mid-engine design might be debated.
There have been a few front, mid-engine cars like the Citroen SM where the motor sits between the driver and the front wheels but this is a difficult design chore.
Almost every automaker had mid-engine designs in planning or production.

 Porsche 914 Mid-Engine Transaxle Selection
Since the Porsche 911 and 912 are rear-engine designs, the transaxle had to be turned around and the pinion and ring gear flipped to accomodate the mid-engine design of the Porsche 914.
Since the transaxle was originally designed for the Porsche 911 and 912 with a rear mounted engine, the shift mechanism is on the opposite end from the bellhousing to make it closer to the driver.
It should be noted, though, that the 914 orginally used a weak 1.7 and later 1.8 liter four cylinder engine (made by Volkswagen) or a detuned Porsche 911T six cylinder engine.

 Corvette Forum - c6 zo6--vs ford GT
Not quite as good as a true rear mid engine design like the GT for this, but much better than a car with the block hanging over the front axel.
\r\nA mid engine vehicle is one in which the engine is positioned between the front and rear axles.
The Corvette\'s engine is behind the centerline of the front wheels, making it a front-mid-engine design.

Spartan Motors Introduces New Mid-Engine RV Platform
In designing a mid-engine coach, Spartan engineers moved the engine and transmission to the middle of the platform, below the floor and just ahead of the rear axle.
Key to increasing storage capacity is a specially designed platform at the rear of the coach that raises and lowers hydraulically.
Placing the engine and transmission in the middle of the coach will allow original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) greater design flexibility to build motorhomes that offer improved ride and handling, greater storage space and more room for slideouts.

MPT Forum: Front engine vs rear engine...which would you rather have?
It also seems that a mid engine or rear engine designs really help braking since not all the weight is up front.
But over all I like the front engine with rear wheel drive, cause it can be a very balanced design, giving great handling, and an easy to get at engine bay.
The Porsche 911 seems to have some of the best braking, that is aided by its rear engine placement.

 Motorhome Review Online
From a manufacturing standpoint, it is easier to hang the engine off the tail, and there is no doubt that a rear radiator costs less to design and install than a side mount.
The transmission with this engine is the Allison MH 3000.
In terms of engine location, the potential for improved weight distribution and the reduction of polar movement is a natural.

Since the traditional body/frame chassis design has given way to the unibody structure on the majority of contemporary cars, Pontiac engineers could have been content with this path for Fiero.
One of the design objectives for the Fiero was optimum, balanced handling performance, so rear-wheel drive was a must.
Pontiac engineers knew that in order to achieve this handling goal, the heavy mass of the engine/drivetrain unit had to be placed as close to the center of the car as possible.

As Car and Driver later recounted: "A new front-engine/rear-drive Camaro had just been approved with [350-cid] V-8 capacity; there was no way a V-6 Corvette could continue as the flagship of the Chevy fleet without turbocharging and intercooling, and it would be tough to sell such a costly, high-tech alternative to management.
Duntov's engineers built two XP-882s during 1969, an identi- cal pair of swoopy fastbacks with an unfortunately blunt front but a dramatic louvered boattail, as on the experimental Mako Shark II of four years before.
Meantime, GM was working feverishly on its own rendition of the rotary-piston engine devised by Dr. Felix Wankel at Germany's NSU, having secured a manufacturing agreement at the behest of president Ed Cole, the legendary Chevy engineer who had lately become an ardent rotary advocate.

Well, technically speaking, thats a 'rear engine' design, not 'mid-engine'.
To get a engine designed for mid engine placement, just grab one out of a ferrari...
If you want an engine that's "designed as a mid-engine", You might as well get the engine out of the Porsche 911 Turbo.

 06 Toyota MR2 Reviews MSRP
With a mid-engine design adopted from race cars and an astounding power-to-weight ratio, this car was built to be driven, and driven hard, down every mile of twisty two-lane blacktop you can find.
This race-born design distributes the car's weight more evenly from front to rear and helps it turn very quickly indeed.
The chassis itself is lightweight yet extremely rigid since the car was designed from the outset as a convertible.

It is already a mid-engine, simplifying the design task greatly, and its engine has great power potential (300 hp) without a lot of internal modification.
Mid-engine layout to minimize polar moment of inertia, simplify exhaust routing, eliminate driveshaft complication and weight, reduce over-hood sightline height, and move the hot parts to the rear of the car.
Engine cradle that is easily separated from the main chassis tub to facilitate easy maintenance, tuning, and modification, unlike "fixed" mid-engine configurations.

Mid-engine Porsche puts laws of science into motion - 1997-05-05
The ignition is still placed on the left side of the steering column, the large, round tachometer remains smack in the center of the instrument panel, and the new design retains Porsche's signature six-cylinder boxer engine.
A heavy engine placed at the front or rear can act like a pendulum that functions as a nasty counterforce when you want to switch from a hard right turn to a hard left turn.
There is a startling difference in the Boxster engine design, however.

Pelican Parts Technical BBS - Your favorite 911 design flaws?
In the words of Ralph Nader, rear engines cars have an "inherent design flaw".
So, in the spirit of healthy self-criticism, I'm going to start a list of the design and engineering aspects of this little car that are part of what makes owning and working on these cars a challenge (albeit a richly rewarding challenge).
This meant a more-balanced mid-engine design couldn't happen, and the resulting seats are useful only as a luggage shelf.

New rules in 1938 reduced engine capacity and therefore power, while new chief engineer Dr. Robert Eberan von Eberhorst changed the rear suspension design to incorporate a De Dion rear axle and the cars finally came good.
Ferrari, the last front-engined runner, began to experiment with a rear- mounted engine in 1960 and by 1961 the entire F1 field would be rear-engined.
This plus the fact that the front bodywork did not need clear the engine made for a much smaller frontal area improving aerodynamics while the center of gravity is situated lower which improves cornering.
