Rear-wheel drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rear wheel drive has fallen out of favor in passenger cars since the 1980s, due in part to higher manufacturing costs, and a perception by many car buyers that front wheel drive is safer, and that it performs better on slippery roads.
Rear-wheel drive (or RWD for short) was a common engine/transmission layout used in automobiles throughout the 20th century.
Towing - Rear wheel drive puts the wheels which are pulling the load closer to the point where a trailer articulates, helping steering, especially for large loads.

Front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or all wheel drive? - Page 2 - Ultimatecarpage.com forums
front wheel drive is safer for the average driver, rear wheel for enthusiasts, all wheel drive for massive horsepower.
All wheel drive has its place but is somewhat of a marketing gimmick made popular by the success of the Subaru WRX which I think had as much to do with the entire package as it did with the fact that it is all whell drive.
All wheel drive is great for rainy and snowy conditions, but i feel it is too safe and the driver loses the pleasure and thrill of driving.

FR layout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Placing the drive wheels at the rear allows ample room for the transmission in the center of the vehicle and avoids the mechanical problems of transmitting drive to steered wheels.
In Automobile design, an FR, or Front-engine, Rear wheel drive means a layout where the engine is in the front of the vehicle and drive wheels at the rear.
The layout is still more suitable than front-wheel drive for engine outputs of more than about 200bhp, as the weight transference during acceleration loads the rear wheels and increases grip.

 Benefits of Rear Wheel Drive
The better weight balance of rear wheel drive allows the car to handle better.
Since the driveline is connected to the steering wheels the torque of the engine applies force to the front wheels causing the car to pull to the right during acceleration.
Rear Drive cars do not have this problem since the engine is not connected to the steering gear.

CanadianDriver: Auto Tech - Rear wheel drive is back!
When a mechanical problem develops in the driveline of a rear wheel drive vehicle, the labour it takes to remove and install components is usually much less because of easier mechanical access.
Rear wheel drive cars place mechanical components at the rear for more equal weight distribution.
With front wheel drive cars, the majority of cornering traction and all acceleration traction must be carried by the front tires.

 Cadillac's Rear-Wheel-Drive Technology - AmericanCarFans.com
When the system senses impending wheel slip during acceleration, it signals the electronic throttle control to reduce drive wheel torque, which the system accomplishes smoothly and seamlessly.
Establishing RWD as the primary drive configuration was the essential enabler for this transition.
While RWD vehicles have always been superior performers on dry, high-coefficient of friction surfaces, low-coefficient tests of these new Cadillacs equipped with advanced chassis controls and tire technologies have demonstrated their ability to operate safely and confidently under all types of adverse weather conditions, including on wet, snow-covered or icy road surfaces.

CanadianDriver: Front wheel drive vs rear wheel drive
We used to have predominately rear wheel drive (RWD) automobiles on the road, but by the late 1970's, front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles were beginning to dominate.
Independent rear suspension, used on many current RWD cars allows the engineers to position the body closer to the differential and driveshaft, so interior room has improved.
Rear tire traction is decreased and the car may swap ends on icy roads easier.

RX8Club.com - Driving technique for rear wheel drive
In a rear drive car, you use the same technique going in, but if the car oversteers (most likely in RWD), you keep the power down and turn against the corner, as much as it needs to straighten out.
I think the 'safe' technique is to brake in a straight line, drive gently through the corner, and dont put the power on until you have exited the bend.
A FWD car you control the turn with the throttle - brake before the turn, turn in, keep the wheel still and if the car understeers, back off the gas until the line tightens.

Why rear-wheel drive is coming back. By Mickey Kaus
This transfers weight to the rear wheels -- away from the driving wheels in a FWD car but toward the driving wheels in a rear-drive car, where it adds to available traction.
The advantages of front-wheel drive (FWD) seem self evident: By avoiding the need for a driveshaft connecting the engine in front with the rear wheels, front-drive cars save space.
To control an oversteering skid, where the rear wheels are heading for the weeds, you have to both slow down and counterintuitively turn the wheel in the opposite of the direction you're turning.

 Rear-Drive Revival - MSN Autos
Some two decades after American automakers began switching their cars from rear-wheel drive, where rear wheels propel the car forward, to front-wheel drive, where front wheels get the engine power and pull the vehicle along the pavement, automakers are bringing new rear-wheel-drive models to showrooms.
In rear-wheel-drive cars, the rear wheels only push the car forward, while steering control is isolated at the front wheels.

But the simple physics of a vehicle being dependent on only 2 wheels for turning AND accelerating vs one that spreads the load just puts FWD at too much of a disadvantage.
