Reason was released early in 2001 to much acclaim within the world of computer based music production and is seen by many as THE all-in-one software studio, even now when just about every major software company in the field has their own take on the concept.
Reason's GUI interface presents the user with a virtual hardware rack which can contain any number of mixers, devices and effects depending on your computers power.
Patch cables were commonly used in analogue synthesizers and they can used to open up a whole dimension of sound modulation possibilities whilst providing Reason with many of the characteristics of a true modular synth.

Reason's quality stands up to the demands of all but the most professional composers, and if you don't have the space or the cash for a full studio, Reason is an impressive alternative.
Reason offers four simulated modules, including an analog synthesizer, a sample playback module, a loop playback module, and a drum machine.
The essential difference between Reason and a standalone synthesizer is that once the MIDI part is captured, the resulting sound doesn't come from your keyboard.

One of the reasons this succeeds is that in a symbolic way the three younger musicians are Kowald's "children." Pianist Dana Reason and Jason Robinson, who plays tenor saxophone and electronics, are both academics; and while Kowald was rarely in academe he reveled in teaching -- formally and informally.
Hans Fjellestad, who plays piano and synthesizer on the CD, is also a filmmaker and Kowald, who was in the midst of creating a documentary Off the Road with Laurence Petit-Jouvet when he arrived in San Diego, was an integral part of other filmed musical performances and was involved with many interdisciplinary performances as well.
Elsewhere, Reason sticks to tremolos and curlicue patterns, abrasive drones and whistles arise from the synthesizer, and the saxman tries out squeaks, honks and staccato lines that involve the body tube more than the reed.

 Using Propellerheads Reason
What makes Reason such a phenomenal success is that it has gone back to this "control voltage" pre-midi analog technology and developed some extremely accurate models of these synths and added everything that has come after it too.
To be sure, Reason comes with tons of material pre-tweaked and ready to let you construct Trance, DnB and many other flavors of electronica.
While Reason does have a small arrangement grid, the focus is more on the Tweak's themselves, the things that generate the sound.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE OPERATION OF MY RAM SYSTEM - RAM-10000 Systems pg2
If for some reason, the synthesizer has stopped operating or the CW amplitude is too small, then the timing module will not operate correctly and there will not be an output trigger from the RAM-10000.
In Mark I and Mark II systems, the source of the CW signal is an external synthesizer, whose output is connected to the "CW In" connector on the rear panel of the RAM instrument.
In Mark VI systems, the CW signal at the desired operating frequency is generated by mixing the output from the synthesizer (fsynthesizer = foperating+freference = foperating +25 MHz) with the 25 MHz reference signal (freference) in the phase detector module to generate (fsynthesizer + freference= foperating+50 MHz) and (fsynthesizer - freference = foperating).

Reason is not a standard digital audio and MIDI-sequencing program, as Cakewalk Sonar is; instead, you use MIDI technology to create notes, and Reason simulates the instruments you need to play back those sounds.
Reason will remember all of the sounds, automation, and other critical data every time you open the file.
You can't easily write complex music that requires multiple meters or tempo changes; Reason's MIDI-sequencing capabilities are just not as robust as those in other professional MIDI sequencers such as Cakewalk Sonar or Mark of the Unicorn Digital Performer.
