Now Rebetiko is being rediscovered again: great collections with traditional recordings from the early part of the century are put on the market and new young bands are studying this part of their heritage.
According to Elias Petropoulos, theorist of rebetiko, the popular discontent of the unemployed anonymous fighters of the Greek revolution of 1821 and of the newly-established Greek state is to be attributed for the phenomenon of the rebetes.
In 1890 Athens, the dropout brotherhood of the rebetes is at its apogee.

Gradually, the worlds of the rebetiko underworld and the wave of immigrants from Asia Minor began to merge; refugees became intimate with the rebetes and manghes, frequenting their tekes and getting high.
Rebetiko singers once again lent expression to the wretchedness of the downtrodden, only this time on a national scale.
The popular, or laiko, period from 1942-1952 saw rebetiko begin to shed its underworld associations and slowly be acknowledged as the national "living" music of Greece.

DER Documentary: I LIKE HEARTS LIKE MINE: MARKOS VAMVAKARIS
Rebetiko is a musical genre that developed out of the urban working class in Greece between the two world wars.
Similarly to jazz and "the blues", rebetiko was not only an art form but a way of life.
In the beginning the rebetes were a social group on the fringe of society with a value system tinged with anarchism and romanticism but at the same time the movement was filled with contradictions.

This originally three string and later four string musical instrument, is the living tradition of Greece and the connective node with the immortal tradition of the Byzantine Empire.
The bouzouki based 'Rebetiko band' (KOMPANIA), was the origin of the 'Peireotiki' school of 'Rebetiko, which was the evolution of the 'Smyrneiki' school.
Because of its artistic value, Rebetiko, very soon became very popular and after the second world war period, it broke the limits of the "Rebetiko" family and it reached every Greek family.

Aegean Blues: the rembetiko renewed / RootsWorld Feature
Vassili Tsitzanis is the recognized master of the mature, classic rebetico; his song "Cloudy Sunday," a truly haunting dirge in 9/8 inspired by a Byzantine hymn, became the unofficial national song in the 40's under the Nazi occupation, and modern Greek composers like Theodorakis and Hadjidakis acknowledge his influence.
But the story of the rebetiko is mainly the stories of hundreds of colorful, charming, tragic figures, from the rebetissas like Sotiria Bellou or Marika Ninou to the virtuosos of bouzouki and baglama, the two instruments that symbolize the genre.
The famous Rebetiko Supper and concert at the Douskos Restaurant on Saturday night was overcrowded and again over-amplified, so the extraordinary musical personality of violinist Kyriakos Gouventas, demonstrated early in the afternoon with a personal introduction and an impromptu duet with Seattle fiddler Hank Bradley, was somewhat obscured.

The rebetiko dances became well known all over little, newly-independent 1830's Greece, following the annexation of Macedonia and Thrace where they were already familiar to the Greek Population.
However, it was the Asia Minor refugees of 1922 those who initiated the locals into the rebetiko dances and contributed to their becoming popular all over motherland Greece.

A Rebetisis today, is simply a term used for a female singer of Greek Rebetiko music.
However during the period in question, being called a Rebetisis had a connotation, that was somewhat more pejorative in nature.

It's an interesting analogy, the suggestion being that Rebetiko filled a niche in Greek culture that is the equivalent of the Blues in American culture.
Well, Rebetiko developed when a large influx of refugees with a somewhat different musical tradition amalgamated their music with the Greek music that was extant at that time, so it isn't just Greek.

Marios & Julie Music from Greece, Rebetiko
As greek music is popular in Austria too, Marios and Julie have won a big number of fans, who appreciate the high level of their skills and the variety of their concert programs.
Rebetiko, traditionals and songs of the worldwide famous composers M.Theodorakis and M. Hatzidakis are the emphasised points of their repertoire, enriched by several brilliant own compositions and contemporary greek songs.
By founding the "Marios and Julie Kompania", new musical horizonts were gradually oppened: gypsy elements from the Balcans got mixed up with oriental and latin percussion, the viennese underground music met the rebetiko, reducing the 2000 Km distance between Vienna and Athens.

Homage to Markos Vamvakaris, London, June 2005
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Markos Vamvakaris (1905-72), one of the founding fathers of Greek popular music, this year's Rebetiko Summer School at SOAS will include a one-day conference dedicated to the life and times of this remarkable composer, instrumentalist and singer.
The name of Vamvakaris is synonymous with the musical genre of Rebetiko, an extraordinary moment of cultural encounter in which Eastern monophony meets Western harmony, and the maqam scales of the Arab and Ottoman world interface with the well-tempered scales of the West.
This conference is part of the "REBETIKO SUMMER SCHOOL" [SOAS World Music Programme] taking place on 22-25 June 2005, with presentations of papers, a violin masterclass with KYRIAKOS GOUVENTAS, a dance workshop on zeibekiko with LOULA KAILAS, and workshop sessions on the main instruments of Rebetiko.
