  The Reboot: Continuity's Best Friend
Why work on some tired old continuity, striving in vain to make it interesting when it is so much easier to throw all the rules out the window and make the character distinctly their own.
Reboots also serve a basic wish fulfillment that all humans crave.
Reboots are the wave of the future, and, ultimately, the savior of comics.

Reboot (continuity) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is analogous to the process of rebooting a computer, clearing out all working memory and reloading the operating system from scratch; neglecting offline storage, none of the previous session's activities have any bearing on the product of the current session, except in the memory of the operator (writer).
Such large continuities also become a barrier to introducing newcomers to the fandom, as the complex histories are difficult to learn, and make understanding the story very difficult; a reboot gives the chance for new fans to experience the story by reintroducing it in smaller and easier to understand installments.
The Transformers Generation One comic was rebooted in 2002 with the Dreamwave comic and in 2006 with the IDW comic.

 Retroactive continuity - Battlestar Wiki
Retcons are different from separate continuities, a designation used on Battlestar Wiki to allow officially-licensed Battlestar Galactica stories (Original or Re-imagined universes) from novels, comics and the like to be listed in the wiki without wrecking the canonical aired content of either series.
Reboots, also known as a "subtraction," is a drastic elimination of past storylines through a substantially new storyline.
The Re-imagined Series itself is a "reboot" of the Original Series, discarding practically everything from the Original Series and recreating new versions and variations of characters, histories, ships and more.

 The Reboot: Continuity's Cancer
The reboot is the last resort of the desperate.
Continuity reasserts itself, and for their remaining issues, Caliveri and Staton acknowledge her return by having Batman guest-star.
Then we have the second reboot existing simultaneously where Batman meets the Huntress who operates in Gotham City--which is completely unnecessary--and resents her mainly because Chuck Dixon characterized Batman as a male chauvinist pig.

Indeed, continuity in general had the same effect:  a villain could not appear without reference to his condition when he was last seen, if not a long continuity of his life and confrontations with the hero.
The readership was invited to imagine creative solutions to continuity gaffs, thus pulling the readers into the very construction of the narrative universe itself.
The problems of continuity are often regarded as the consequences of this phenomenon of quickly-produced interlocking narratives occurring in the same narrative universe and running, in the case of both DC and Marvel, since the late 1930s.

Yes, the reboot gave Superman a fresh start, but removing his past from continuity did the Legion of Super-Heroes continuity damage from which it has never recovered (for what it's worth, I quit when Levitz left the books and the 5-year gap happened).
While the reboot may have been Good for Superman, it was Bad for all those in the DC Universe whose histories were tied in with the now out of continuity previous Superman.
There was no single Continuity Cop overseeing the Whole Big Picture and discrepancies and inconsistencies started to crop up as each group editor oversaw their corner of the DCU with their characters but no master presence coordinated between them all, thus, we're back to fixing those problems now 20 years later.

ReBoot is considered by many as one of the greatest cartoons ever.
A hard reboot (also known as a cold reboot) is when power to a computer is cycled (turned on and off) or a special reset signal to the processor is triggered (from a front panel switch of some sort).
A soft reboot (also known as a warm reboot, in contrast to a cold reboot) is restarting a computer under software control, without removing power or (directly) triggering a reset line.

In the same story is a link to a 14-page treatment (link to PDF) for a new Trek TV series, conceived by J. Michael Straczynski and Bryce Zabel a couple of years ago, in which they proposed a "reboot" of the Star Trek universe.
In this reboot idea, a new continuity would be established and the five year mission of the original Trek would be retold with a new cast and a new vision of the future.
Part of the justification of this plan is that fans would accept the changes to these iconic characters because they accept similar reboots in comic books.

 The Reboot
This "reboot" was the first in a series of "Superman Events" (including the later "Death of Superman" and "Superman gets a new costume" storylines) that would result in intense media attention.

In the new continuity, too, kryptonite radiation can call an ordinary human being is he or she is exposed to it long enough, although it affects ordinary human beings at a far slower rate than it does Kryptonians.

Unlike regular continuity, where once the reboot occurred, Ben Reilly was largely forgotten — in the Spider-Girl Universe, the memory of Ben Reilly is very much present — which makes sense — one does not lose a brother and forget him.
One of the reasons some of us are such continuity mavens is not because we like to obsess over every little detail (o.k., there is that..), but because a tightly adhered to continuity makes every story important in one way or another.

The Crisis was a bizarre exercise in demolishing the existing continuity (on the basis that it had become unwieldy); asserting that a streamlined version still applied (and that history was broadly valid); and then spending the next few years blithely ignoring everything and throwing everything into confusion.

There were a number of attempts made to create a new continuity in which to house Superman's newly restored personality and characterization.
The first of these never made it out of the gate: The Superman 2000 proposal would have worked within the established 1986 reboot continuity, but it was ultimately rejected by DC.
The 2nd, which retconned the 1986 reboot into "a false memory," also worked within the established continuity but simultaneously incorporated many elements and sensibilities of the Bronze Age.

Reboot was the first television series to to be created entirely in CGI, and followed the adventures of Bob, a guardian sprite, and the inhabitants of Mainframe, a computer system, as they battled against the evil virus Megabyte, and other threats.
As the season progressed however, a bit more character depth was added, and by the end of the season, the format had switched from mere random episodes to a continuing story line.
The story continued logically from the end point of season two, then created a new direction with a plot twist.

a reboot that was "in continuity" i would think would be one that explains away the reboot and maintains the linear continuity of the character while still starting off with a clean slate.

The reason such "stealth reboots" are often accomplished without raising the hackles of those who yell the loudest about things like MAN OF STEEL is that they are presented "in continuity", and can be accepted as "growth" even if, very often, they are nothing of the sort.
Just like you mentioned that Spider-man had gone through a reboot, even Batman stayed in his own continuity, and the rebooter probably knew that the old Batman stories were something that the readers hadn't read, so he could change 90 percent of it and not raise an eyebrow.

I ask this because they don't really follow along with the story-lines presented in Superman and Adventures of Superman titles -- specifically during the "Exile"(beginning in Feburary 1989) story-line where Superman was wandering through the galaxy out of guilt, but the Action Comics Superman stories still had him here on good old Earth.
The reason that I stress the proper order is that before about 1989 or so, the 3 (at that time) different titles didn't "flow" through each other with the story line.

Another point is that candidates for a reboot have rich premises that are insufficiently explored for a variety of reasons whether bad writing or studio interference or cancellation.
Finally, it would be necessary to reboot the elements that worked, but were dropped or badly explored in the original series, such as Logan St. Clair, the possiblity of Arturo being replaced by a double and Quinn's double who introduces him to sliding before making a big mistake.

Microsoft Solutions for Management: Service Continuity Management   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Service continuity management is concerned with managing risks to ensure that an organization's IT infrastructure can continue providing services in the event of an unlikely or unanticipated event.
Service continuity management ensures that the service is available in the event of a service disruption, regardless of the cause of the disruption (disaster, component failure, virus attack, and so on).
Although service continuity management provides contingency plans to handle any disaster, these may involve a prolonged period of downtime before the IT service is fully restored and this factor needs to be taken into consideration during any re-negotiation with the customer.

The continuity errors are trivial, they're not so severe as to make or break continuity.
There has been far, far, far worse continuity errors in ongoing lines of Bantam and Del Rey books by the same authors- and there is no excuse for that at all- yet they're still writing novel after novel.
