  Rebutia by Doug Snell
Rebutias across the board have flowers which are relatively large in relation to their bodies.
Rebutias hybridise readily so it is possible that your treasured plant may not be true to the name on the label.
Rebutias are subject to the same range of pests and diseases as other cacti; mealy-bug in particular and fungus and rot problems brought about by overwatering and high humidity.

Plants Belonging to the Genus 'Rebutia'
After the recent incorporation of the genera Aylostera, Mediolobivia, Rebutia, Sulcorebutia, and Weingartia into the genus Rebutia, there are now around 60 species of cactus native to the eastern side of the Andes Mountains in Bolivia and Northern Argentina.
The genus Rebutia is named after P. Rebut, French cactus dealer and expert from the 19th century.

Easy Cactus - Growing Rebutia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Rebutia cacti are native to Bolivia and Argentina where they grow mostly at altitudes of around 12,000 feet.
Rebutia are easy plants to grow and will reward you with brightly coloured flowers which are produced in shades of red, yellow and orange.
Grow most species of Rebutia cacti in full sun during the summer and winter avoiding only the harshest summer sun, if kept too dark they may become overly lush and could be prone to rotting due to over watering, they will also be shy to produce flowers.

cactus-books.com: Rebutia, The Cactus File Handbook 2 by John Pilbeam
The author views Rebutia in the old sense, rather than including those species that have been amalgamated from Sulcorebutia by some authors.
In the main chapter, the "Commentary on Species", each of the recognized species and varieties is discussed in detail, with full colour illustrations of the plants growing and flowering in cultivation.
This Handbook is a must, both for Rebutia enthusiasts and general cactus growers, providing a comprehensive and colourful reference source on one of the most popular genera of South American cacti.

Gola, Edyta M.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The analysis of the sequential initiation of areoles in seedlings of both groups shows that in Rebutia, Aylostera, Pseudolobivia, Gymnocalycium areoles are initiated in pairs.
In Rebutia occasionally areoles of one pair differ in timing of their appearance or deviate from expected circumferential position indicating the change of the pattern into simple spiral.
Despite the different modes of areole initiation, the reasons for the phyllotaxis diversity in such genera as in Rebutia are not completely elucidated since in seedlings only the most common patterns have been found.

MICRO GRAFTING OF It is easy to graft seedlings of Rebutia using micro grafting techniques (grafting a section containing multiple areoles).
This is a good first attempt project for micro grafting because many of the Rebutia seedlings start out as thin slender columns with very fine flexible spines.
After rinsing off the dirt and/or pinching off the root I will place the rootless seedling on a clean paper plate, give it a very fine mist spray of 70% alcohol and then push it to a dry area of the paper plate to finish drying before cutting it into pieces.

Unlike other Rebutia, among which R. pulvinosa, R. albiflora is very soil-tolerant, it grows equally well in organic mixes and in purely mineral ones.
In that kind of growing medium R. pulvinosa, R. muscula, R. ithyacantha, R. albopectinata, R. schatzliana, R. verebii and others shows a trend for a yellow apex to appear although roots are abundant and perfectly healthy, it is highly likely to be an instance of a special weakness for a disease to appear.
