Its theological precision defining Trinitarian and Arian tenets, establishing Reccared's newly-achieved orthodox belief, and its extensive quotation from scripture reveal that it was in fact ghostwritten for the king, doubtless by Leander.
In it Reccared declared that God had inspired him to lead the Goths back to the true faith, from which they had been led astray by false teachers.

Leovigild also ousted the Germanic Suevi from their strongholds at León and Zamora, thus enlarging his kingdom to the north and west as well, but for another generation the Eastern Roman emperor retained a base in southeastern Spain, which retained its old Roman name of Hispania Baetica.
Leovigild further reinforced possibilities of a peaceful future succession, a perennial Visigothic issue, by associating his two sons, Hermenegild and Reccared, with himself in the kingly office and placing certain regions under their regencies.
With the death of Leovigild, his other son Reccared, who had converted to Catholicism in 589, brought religious and political unity to link the Visigoths with their subjects.

Visigothic persecution of Jews had to wait for the conversion to Catholicism of the Visigothic king Reccared, and the same synod of Catholic bishops in 633 that usurped the Visigothic nobles' right to confirm the election of a king declared that all Jews must be baptised.
The Visigothic Code of Law (forum judicum) which had been part of aristocratic oral tradition, was set in writing in the early 7th century— and survives in two separate codices preserved at the Escorial.

The earliest use of Filioque language in a credal context is in the profession of faith formulated for the Visigoth King Reccared at the local Council of Toledo in 589.
It appears that the Spanish bishops and King Reccared believed at that time that the Greek equivalent of Filioque was part of the original creed of Constantinople, and apparently understood that its purpose was to oppose Arianism by affirming the intimate relationship of the Father and Son.
On Reccared’s orders, the Creed began to be recited during the Eucharist, in imitation of the Eastern practice.
