Recce became divisional troops with a squadron or regiment attached to each of the infantry, armoured and airborne divisions.
Due to the nature of their work Recce was always at the vanguard of an advance and losses were high, as many as 1 in 10 were killed in action.
A normal Recce unit attached to an infantry division would be of regiment size, 4 squadrons consisting of 4 troops each, operating armoured cars and universal carriers.

‘Recce Pukes’ was a term used to describe the men who flew tactical reconnaissance by the drivers of the fighter and fighter bomber squadrons whose job it was to fight air to air or deliver ordnance.
Recce pilots took an enormous pride in their mission and the skills as pilots they had to attain in order to achieve it.
The recce runs were made at 1,000 and 10,000 feet and resulted in a picture portrayal of the actual bomb run to be made with the terrain features clearly defined.

My thoughts are that if recce is to be reduced to two runs only in the WRC then the stages should be changed so that everyone has to write new notes, this would level the playing field somewhat.
Where the recce is limited to certain hours, endeavour to travel to the stages outside of these times, therefore maximising the time on the stages themselves.
Make sure the recce schedule as advised by the event is thoroughly checked, study the map so that you have some idea where you will be going.

An examination in 1940 of the performance of the German Army prior to Dunkirk led the Army Council to decide that one of the changes needed to improve the performance of the British Army was to introduce a new type of unit to take the place of the light cavalry of the past.
Airborne Division was established it too had to have its Recce unit but only a Squadron equipped with Jeeps and Motorcycles due the problem of getting anything bigger or heavier to the battlefield by air in the Horsa gliders available at that time.
