Gas compressor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Compressors are closely related to pumps: both increase the pressure on a fluid and both can transport the fluid through a pipe.
As gases are compressible, the compressor also reduces the volume of a gas, whereas the main result of a pump raising the pressure of a liquid is to allow the liquid to be transported elsewhere.
Larger reciprocating compressors up to 1000 HP are still commonly found in large industrial applications, but their numbers are declining as they are replaced by less costly rotary screw compressors.

 RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS
Our most popular reciprocating compressor model is the versatile 450XL® It's designed to use virtually any industrial refrigerant, operating at compression ratios of up to 8:1 with ammonia and up to 12:1 with some halocarbons.
Other reciprocating compressor models include the popular 440, long recognized as the "workhorse of the industry;" and the 350ES, designed specifically for industrial and commercial halocarbon applications.
Compressors are available in three (3) models having 4, 6, and 8 cylinders with a gross displacement of 134 to 268 CFM at 1200 rpm.

The reciprocating compressor operates as the trim unit to handle the fluctuating air demands that are over the capacity of the rotary screw.
At 105 psig, the reciprocating compressor is supposed to partially unload and the rotary screw is supposed to continue on as the base load unit.
Direct connections to the discharge air line of a reciprocating compressor produces pulsations which may be harmful to the pressure gauges, check valves, controls and the air oil separator element in the rotary screw compressor.

 Compressor Facility [Williams.com]
The size and the number of compressors varies, based on the diameter of the pipe and the volume of gas to be moved.
It should be noted that except for the small amount of debris and liquids captured to protect the compressors, and the natural gas needed to run the compressor station, all the natural gas that enters a compressor station leaves it again through the pipeline.
Deciding between which type of compressor to use is based on the flowrate through the compressor as well as the amount of pressure that is needed.

Generally, a reciprocating compressor is constructed such that a piston of the compressor is integrally combined with the armature (moving element) of a reciprocating electric motor, instead of using a crank shaft.
However, in the conventional reciprocating compressor as described above, only the front end of the inner stator is supported by the frame, and the rear end of the inner stator is left free as it is, and therefore the inner stator can not be fixed strongly.
The general operation of the reciprocating compressor having the stator supporting apparatus according to the present invention is similar to that of the conventional art.

 Reciprocating Refrigeration Compressor Failure Diagnostics
Compressor Oil Loss: Quantity of oil returning from the system is less than that leaving the compressor.
Often a combination is applied where the compressor at the off-cycle will continue running until the crankcase pressure has dropped to a predetermined pressure, after which, the compressor is locked out only to recycle on load demand while then a crankcase heater acts to keep refrigerant from settling in the oil.
Unless the compressor is much unloaded, the loss of power to one half of the total winding or one of the tandem windings will result in over working and thus overheating of the remaining half winding.

Background of the Invention In the reciprocating compressors with a linear motor, the reciprocating movement of a piston inside a cylinder is effected by means of an actuator, which supports a magnetic component activated by the linear motor.
The aim of connecting the piston to the resonant spring by means of a flexible connecting rod is to minimize the transmission of moments of the piston resulting from alignment errors between the center of the resonant spring and the center of the cylinder.
In the illustrated prior art construction, the compressor has a non-resonant structure 1, including a cylinder la, inside which is provided a piston 2 coupled to an actuator 3, usually tubular and external to the cylinder la and provided with a magnet 4, which is axially impelled by energization of the electric motor (figure 1).

 Air Compressor Selection
Reciprocating air compressors are available either as air-cooled or water-cooled in lubricated and non-lubricated configurations, may be packaged, and provide a wide range of pressure and capacity selections.
Oil less compressors are designed with a low-friction coating on their moving parts to eliminate the need for oil, are generally less expensive than their oil-lubricated counterparts and don't require you to change the oil on a regular basis.
The "cut-in" pressure (the pressure level that kicks on the compressor), in compressors currently on the market, is about 95 psi, while the new 2-stage compressors have a cut-in pressure of about 145 psi, so the compressor keeps a significant reserve for long blasting jobs.

 Improving Reciprocating Compressor Valve Life
The purpose of the valves in a reciprocating compressor is to let air in and out of the cylinder during the compression process.
Compressor valves serves as check valves for the inlet and discharge passages of the cylinder and will open and close once for every revolution of the crankshaft.
It is possible to run reciprocating compressors with valves out of tolerance and it happens more than you think.

 Reciprocating Compressor
The suction pressure of the first stage of the reciprocating compressor is maintained at 62.5 PSIG and the discharge pressure of the second stage is maintained at 1000 PSIG.
Since reciprocating compressors displace a constant volume of gas regardless of operating conditions, the compressor must be configured to displace slightly more gas than is required.
Alternatively, the speed of the compressor may be adjusted to trim the amount of gas displaced, however, this is not a typical arrangement since most reciprocating compressors are designed to run at a constant speed.

Because of the feed gas is hydrocarbons, the hazard of sucking a partial vacuum with the reciprocating compressor is always present.
This is an oversight in the compressor design that you must correct or otherwise you run the risk of sucking in air and forming a combustible mixture in the hydrocarbon feed gas.
