In the end of Halo 2, Delta Halo is armed and then unexpectedly shut down, causing it to send a superluminal signal to all other Halos in the galaxy, putting them on standby mode.
One possible support for this theory is that on the mission Delta Halo in Halo 2, the opening cutscene shows the continent Master Chief lands on.
Another give-away would be near the end of Halo 1, while the Master Chief and Cortana were trying to activate The Pillar of Autumn's fusion reactors, 343 Guilty Spark spoke of the Autumn's Human History records in it's archives.

A "Reclaimer" is an individual who, whether by chance or by precedent, has been placed in charge of retrieving an item known as the Index, returning it to, and subsequently placing it into a control panel within a control center on a Halo structure to activate a massive superweapon.
In addition, in Halo: The Flood the Master Chief encounters the corpse of Sergeant Marvin Mobuto in the Library, whom Spark also refers to as a Reclaimer.

The installation (Halo) was built specifically to study and contain the Flood - their (forerunner) survival as a race was dependant on it (the containment of the flood).
In Halo: FoR, someone mentions that the children chosen for the Spartan II project were as close to being geneticly pure as humanly possible.
Even if Halo's superweapon was actually fired before for real, there is no positive evidence to support that 343 GS was the one in charge of Halo when it was fired.

Activation of one Halo is done by entering the libraryin one and retrieving the Index, which the monite rof the isntallation will then keep for safety purposes, then the "reclaimer", will go to the main control area and inser tit with some commands, activating the Halo.
The Halos were made to creater a blast, going many lightyears, and activate the other Halos, isntantly obliterating all sentient life in the univer within the Halos reach.

But only certain humans are used as Reclaimers, for example 343 Guilty Spark is not concerned about finding another Reclaimer in Halo, yet does not want Miranda Keyes to be hurt, meaning that any human he has seen (which include Seargant Johnson) cant be used.
Since the Halos were constructed in defense of the Flood, it would make most sense for the Forerunners to select someone of their own likeness or their own species for the Halo's activation.
My theory behind this is that in a last desperate measure, the Forerunner had to activate the Halos all at once, and did so from the Ark, where they stayed afterwards until the Flood had starved to death.

 343 Guilty Spark
In the original Halo, neither the Covenant nor the Flood have any major characters, so by default 343 Guilty Spark serves as that game's main antagonist (although, by that definition, Cortana would serve as a more appropriate protagonist to him than would the Master Chief).
Once Miranda Keyes, another Reclaimer, is captured—along with Delta Halo's Index—both she and the Oracle are taken by Tartarus to Delta Halo's Control Room.
The number seven could also relate to the English alphabet: G is the seventh letter counted from the beginning of the alphabet and so is T if counted from the end, "G" and "T" being the initials for "Guilty" in Guilty Spark and "Tangent" in Penitent Tangent respectively.

He refers to the chief as reclaimer, and speaks as if they'd met before ("Last time you asked me, if it was my choice would I do it...").
Another problem that people have with Halo, and one I thoroughly agree with (although it isn't really Halo's fault that it's a fun game), is that it's brought many "casual gamers" onto the scene.

As you might imagine, something is not quite right in Denmark or in space, and sure enough, it’s all courtesy of the Covenant who, in spite of their ability to wage effective intergalactic war, cannot seem to take a step without triggering yet another alien hazard.
In their mad dash to grab and activate Halo, the Covenant released the very things that Halo is designed to hold and destroy, the Flood, an infection-like species whose spores infect a sentient being, take them over and create mindless zombies bent on sucking the brains of others.

it seems logical that humans (Forerunners) ages ago encountered the Flood, and created the Halo in a last ditch effort to save themselves...and succeded, and only a pocket of humans were spared, on earth...the others constructed the Halo sacrificing themselves to stop the Flood.

 Re: GoO Observations/Questions *SPOILERS*
That Reclaimer is an honorific does not mean they are necessarily Forerunner.
But to suggest it is an actual fact puts the novel in direct conflict with the game where 343GS clearly states the Forerunners all died, and in my canonical calculus, the games win out over the novels every time.
There is also a suggestion in the use of the word "aboriginal" that their failure to provide the code response is due to being less advanced than "true" reclaimers would have been.
