Heuristic 3 attempts to use both width and number of pixels, by summing the squares of the two normalized numbers and selecting the component with the largest sum.
Heuristic 1 merges the component with the smallest enclosing rectangle with its nearest neighbor.
Although we have generally limited the heuristics here to operate only on the same input vectors that were used for pattern classification, such modules are free to process arbitrarily large amounts of data to base their decisions on.

The use of gestures in multimodal input
Heuristic rules were developed based on knowledge about the particular modes of motion of the head, such as limited translational movement.
The heuristics developed were based on generic input properties derived from the data obtained from the interaction process and optimized accordingly.
This was derived from a set of heuristic rules that were refined as the trials progressed, based on the numerical data gathered and the observations made during the user sessions.

 Edge: SMART HEURISTICS
The heuristic is that you adjust your running speed so that the angle of the gaze, the angle between the eye and the ball, remains constant.
This heuristic only pays attention to one variable, the angle of gaze, and can ignore all the other causal, relevant variables and achieve the same goal much faster, more frugally, and with less chances for error.
Heuristics are also useful in very important practical ways relating to economics.

 Pattern_Recognition
In this paper we describe an advanced heuristic pattern recognition system based on “simulated annealing” and “tabu search”, algorithms which have been improved in order to perform an interactive classification and recognition of the objects.
Pattern recognition is the research area that studies the operation and design of systems that recognize patterns in data.
A heuristic solution is based on human intuition and experience, uses ad-hoc procedures and rules and does not find the best solution, but an acceptable one.

Simple Heuristics that Make Us Smart   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Heuristics are not simply handicapped versions of optimal strategies; there are no optimal strategies in many or most real-world environments in the first place.
The motivations for studying the behavior of fast and frugal heuristics include: (i) resources such as time, knowledge, attention, and computational capacities are limited; (ii) optimal strategies are not known or not feasible in many real-world situations; (iii) by attempting to compute "optimal" strategies for each decision, minds would be paralyzed by combinatorial explosion.
Heuristics can be ecologically rational to the degree that they can exploit the structure of information in real-world environments.

Rachel posts about the recognition heuristic, which may not immediately strike you as rivetting reading.
I’ve got to admit that when I read the first sentence of the post I thought, “In Swansea they speak of little else!” But it is fascinating stuff and Rachel is kind enough to produce an explanation that most of us will be able to understand.
…the heuristic says that when making a judgment about two items, an individual who only recognises one of the items will consider the known item to have a higher value.

 Heuristics for User Interface Design
They are called "heuristics" because they are more in the nature of rules of thumb than specific usability guidelines.
I originally developed the heuristics for heuristic evaluation in collaboration with Rolf Molich in 1990 [Molich and Nielsen 1990; Nielsen and Molich 1990].
I since refined the heuristics based on a factor analysis of 249 usability problems [Nielsen 1994a] to derive a set of heuristics with maximum explanatory power, resulting in this revised set of heuristics [Nielsen 1994b].

Whereas it is easy to observe heuristic search in people solving problems notice that people have some kind of general architecture that lets them do all sorts of problems whereas AI researchers have not yet found such a general approach, every new problem must be programmed.

Abstract: In an on-line learning environment where optimal recognition performance over the newly encountered patterns is required, a robust incremental learning procedure is necessary to re-configure the entire neural network without affecting the stored information.
In this paper, an heuristic pattern correction scheme based upon an hierarchical data partitioning principle is proposed for digit word recognition.

The point of Dan-Cohen’s “personless corporation” thought experiment is to present the metaphor of an intelligent machine as a heuristic device that he believes is better suited for understanding the unique nature of formal organizations than alternatives, such as Ladd’s metaphor of a non-thinking machine.
