Halfbakery: recoil powered machine gun cooling system
recoil of the weapon would force a small piston to pump cooling media through a series of coils around the machine gun barrel, to a radiator(perhaps mounted under the barrel) then back to the piston pump.
During the lockup period, I'm guessing that a large percentage of the recoil energy is transmitted from the face of the bolt to the receiver and to the frame of the weapon.
Recoil operation works very well for pistols, but having the barrel move relative to the frame makes it hard to achieve perfect accuracy.

Recoil operated firearms therefore tend to work best when using a cartridge with a grain size (mass) near where the gun's action was originally optimized in terms of momentum.
Long recoil operated firearms have a distinct "double recoil" feel to them, the "first recoil" being the halting of the rearward motion of the bolt and barrel, and the "second recoil" being the heavy barrel returning to battery.
Note that the shotgun must be free to recoil for this to work--the compressibility of the shooter's body is sufficient to allow this movement, but firing the shotgun from a secure position in a rest or with the stock against the ground will not allow it to recoil sufficiently to operate the mechanism.

The recoil when firing a gun is the backward momentum of a gun, which is equal to the forward momentum of the bullet or shell, due to conservation of momentum.
The short-recoil system of operation is that which uses the recoil of the firearm to function (that is, to lock/unlock the firearm's breech, to extract and eject the cartridge case from the firearm, to feed a new cartridge into the chamber, and to ready the firing mechanism).
In a recoil operated handgun, the barrel and slide are locked together during firing.

Tensioning and recoil system for a tracked vehicle - Patent 4881786
Conventional recoil systems for self-laying track-type vehicle utilize pre-compressed large diameter steel coil springs to resist recoiling during light loading of the idler wheel and to return the wheel to the normal position after recoiling during heavy loading.
With reference to the drawings, the subject track recoil and tensioning mechanism is particularly useful for providing a recoil function for the idler wheel 18 of a belted track vehicle 10, and for maintaining proper tension on the flexible belt 24.
During operation of the vehicle 10, it is important that the tension force on the belt 24 remain substantially constant, since the belt 24 is driven by frictional engagement with the drive wheel 16.

Types of Operation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The method of operation in which the breech is kept closed by the inertia of the breech-block and pressure of the recoil spring so that, on firing, the chamber pressure 'blows the bolt back' once it overcomes this inertia.
As the slide recoils, the rearward motion of the piston is resisted by the gas pressure bled into the tube.
In this type of operation, the barrel actually moves inside the weapon in order to transmit force to the breech block, while keeping the breech locked until pressure inside the bore drops to a level safe enough for case extraction to begin.

Principles of Firearms -- Operating Systems -- Short Recoil
As with inertia operation, cycling energy comes from recoil forces, this time applied to both the free-moving barrel and bolt masses, rather than the bolt alone as in inertia arms.
In recoil operation the bolt and barrel are locked together initially.
In the most successful deceleration and acceleration short recoil designs, namely Browning's M1911 pistol and M2 machine gun, locking is accomplished by tipping the barrel or sliding a lock vertically in the bolt.

The beauty of recoil operation is that much of energy that produces felt recoil is absorbed by the barrel, bolt, and carrier group as the weapon cycles.
In recoil operated systems, bolt and carrier velocity play a critical role in not only felt recoil, but in extraction and ejection as well (too fast you get case head seperation, too slow and you get stovepiping).
The final benefit of recoil operated systems is that the exhaust gasses can be used as part of the recoil management system.

Recoil energy comes partly from the change in cinetic energy inflicted on the bullet and partly from the propellant gases exiting the muzzle of the weapon.
Instead, the vented gases are used to delay the release of the bolt which is cycled by the recoil force exercised on the bolt face by the cartridge itself; i.e.
This mode of operation is called gas delayed blowback and it is very different from the gas piston operation of the FAL, AK and G36.

It uses recoil energy from the firing of a round of ammunition to operate the mechanism of the weapon and extract the fired case, eject it against spring tension, and return the mechanism to firing position again.
This is based on the principle of operation that the recoil force exerted on the mechanism must overcome some form of mechanical disadvantage, momentarily holding the breechblock closed until the bullet had cleared the muzzle of the weapon.

Blowback is a system in which automatic or semi-automatic firearms operate through the energy created by combustion in the chamber and bore acting directly on the bolt face through the cartridge.
Other operating systems are recoil operation, gas-actuated, gatling and chain.
It was later discovered that the bullet had left the barrel long before any locking could occur and that Savage pistols merely operated on a pure blowback basis; the rotation of the barrel might play a minor role by slowing the rearward motion of the slide as the slide cycled.
