Recoilless rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lightweight 73 mm recoilless rifles are still in service in the Russian army in airborne units, and Soviet B10 82 mm heavy recoilless rifles are found quite commonly around the world in the inventories of former Soviet client states, where it is usually used as an antitank gun.
M40 106 mm recoilless rifles of US manufacture, mounted on jeeps or similar small vehicles, are very common in the armies of many poorer countries, where they serve in the role of tank destroyers.
Perhaps the oddest adaptation of a recoilless rocket was the M-388 Davy Crockett, which used a recoilless rifle to launch a tactical nuclear warhead, deployed (but of course never used) by the United States in the 1960's.

 THE CANNON PIONEERS
The F.B.7 was a relatively conventional twin-engined biplane, with the gunner and gun in the nose.
This became popularly known as the Rocket Gun after an early misunderstanding as to the nature of the weapon; in fact it was a conventional gun firing a 40x79R cartridge (a shortened version of the common 40x158R naval AA round).
The Davis guns had a breech which was open to the rear and used the counterweight principle, in which the cartridge fired a weight (normally lead shot) to the rear which was equal to the projectile weight, cancelling out the recoil.

 RECOILLESS RIFLE
The recoilless rifle combined a rocket propelled munition with a rifled barrel (unlike the smooth bore bazooka) firing a spin-stabilized round with anti-tank capability.
The M18 and M18A1 recoilless rifle were developed late in World War II for use like a bazooka as an anti-tank or anti-personnel weapon.
The 90 mm recoilless rifle, M67, was a lightweight, portable, crew-served weapon intended primarily as an antitank or antipersonnel weapon designed to be fired from the ground using the bipod, monopod, or metal frame shoulder stock.

The first recoilless gun was developed during WWI by Commander Davis of the US Navy.
The attraction of a recoilless weapon is that a much lighter light artillery piece of a given caliber can be created, as it eliminates the need for the massive recoil mechanisms required for conventional artillery.
In the case of the 57mm anti-tank gun this was a huge difference.

Having a gun mounted in the hull or in a superstructure limits the amount of elevation and traverse of the weapon.
It should be noted that the Davis Gun principle was resurrected by the warring nations in the 1930s, the Germans and the Russians the most notable, in an attempt to equip aircraft with large caliber cannon without having to impose the recoil stresses of conventional cannon upon the airframe.
The recoilless rifles, of which there are only two as compared to the M50s six, are, when in traveling condition, laid straight and kept secure by a travel lock on the front of the hull.

Introduction to Modern Air Gun Technology
Spring air guns generally develop a significant of recoil from the action of the movement of the piston, but it is possible to produce a recoilless spring air gun.
Single stroke guns have the advantage of being quick to cock, efficient is their use of muscle energy, and having a high degree of consistency from shot to shot.
Precharged guns are basically a British invention, and while guns using a reservoir of compressed air have been around for a couple of centuries, most modern precharged pneumatics seem to derive from a modified gun that was designed for shooting tranquilizer darts through a large smooth bore.

 The Concept IC Engine
The comparison between a gun and the reciprocating internal combustion engine is appropriate, the piston can be likened to a bullet or projectile, the cylinder to a barrel and the fuel - air, mixture to the explosive propellant.
The reduction of recoil in the recoilless gun is due to the fact that the mass/velocity of the escaping gases is engineered to equal or approximate the mass/velocity of the projectile, thereby canceling each other out, the velocity of the escaping gases can be increased by use of a venturi or nozzle.
In multi-cylinder recoilless engines, the secondary turbine unit might in fact function more efficiently than the primary piston unit, because of the provision of a continuous flow of hot exhaust gases at velocity to power the turbine.

The gas exited the gun via a hole in a plate which formed a part of the breechblock.
This was gradually eroded by gas pressure and had to be replaced after each twenty AP rounds were fired, and after each forty HE and practice rounds (the AP rounds were loaded to a higher pressure); the state of wear of this plate affected the muzzle velocity.
The gun was clearly capable of matching the armour penetration of the best of the existing anti-tank rifles, yet it was far smaller and lighter at only 1.4m long and 11.2kg.

If the Davis principle were taken to its logical ends, the countershot could be half the weight and twice the velocity of the principal projectile or any other combination giving the same momentum; at its ultimate, the countershot could simply be a cloud of high-velocity gas.
Thie latter was the system upon which recoilless guns were subsequently developed.
The cartridge cases of these weapons have a weakened section that ruptures on firing, allowing about four-fifths of the propellant gas to be exhausted to the rear of the gun after passing through a venturi that increased the gas velocity and so balanced the recoil generated by the projectile.
