She wants to establish the circumstances of the Recollet missions in New France and to explain the rhetoric of the 'Mémoire.' As for the latter, Dubé limits herself to a painstaking dissection of the 'Mémoire' entirely based on two treatises by Chaïm Perelman and L. Olbrechts-Tyteca (1970, 1988).
Fourth, according to Dubé, the return of the Recollets in 1670 was due to their 'moderating role' (16) in the crisis between crown and church in Canada.
In conclusion, the reader must be aware that Dubé's understanding of the relationship between crown and church in the old regime is seriously flawed and that she is somewhat unfamiliar with the recent historiographical debate.

The Jesuit Missions, by Thomas Guthrie Marquis #4 Chronicles of Canada : Arthur's Classic Novels
The Indians expressed a readiness to give the Recollet Daillon a passage; they knew the 'grey-robes'; but they did not know the Jesuits, the 'fl-robes,' and they hesitated to take Brebeuf and Noue, urging as an excuse that so portly a man as Brebeuf would be in danger of upsetting their frail canoes.
The Recollet, however, had instructions from his superior Le Caron to go to the country of the Neutrals, of which Champlain's interpreter, Etienne Brule, had reported glowingly, but which was as yet untrodden by the feet of missionaries.
Most interesting, however, to the Jesuits and Recollets were the provisions in the charter of the new company to the effect that none but Catholics should be allowed to come to the colony, and that during fifteen years the company should defray the expenses of public worship and support three missionaries at each trading-post.

Although the Recollets learned Wendat, their grasp of the language was inadequate and their lack of understanding of Wendat culture added to the difficulty they had in communicating with their hosts.
According to Bruce Trigger, the insistence of the Recollets on living apart from the villagers was a significant irritant between the missionaries and the Wendat.
Although the Jesuits were more accepting of cultural differences than the Recollets, Brebeuf was apparently influenced by the practices of Daillon, the Recollet resident in Wendake.

Indeed, if the two previous Recollets had carried on a ministry among these Indians, they would have recommended to him “the study of the prayers in the language of Gaspé” instead of writings in the Algonkin language which the Indians scarcely understood.
The Recollets had from 1615 on acquired the habit of sending relations or yearly letters to their superior, and their relatives and friends; the Relations des Jésuites came later.

The greatest trial the Recollets had to bear was the opposition of the Company of St Malo and Rouen, which was composed largely of Huguenots, and had a monopoly of the trade of New France.
At length, in 1621, as a result of the complaints of Champlain and the Recollets, before the authorities in France, the Company of St Malo and Rouen lost its charter, and the trading privileges were given to William and Emery de Caen, uncle and nephew.
Champlain, though the nominal head of the colony, was unable to provide a remedy, for the real power was in the hands of the Caens, who had in their employment practically the entire population.

One Recollet served as parish priest, another as military chaplain within the citadel of the fortress, and a third essentially combined the two roles by ministering both to the troops at the Royal Battery and people on the north shore of Louisbourg’s harbour.
Before the coming of the Recollets, it was maintained, there was an insufficient number of secular priests at Placentia and the Recollets were willing to serve the outports and the fishing industry despite the small amount of income they received.
The Recollets at Louisbourg argued that they should be exempted from such observance during the summer months and in 1716 Bishop Saint-Vallier complied with their request but added the proviso that they attend Mass before setting out after their catch.

The salvation of one soul was to him 'of more value than the conquest of an empire.' Not far from his native town of Brouage there was a community of the Recollets, and, during one of his periodical sojourns in France, he invited them to send missionaries to Canada.
The Recollets responded to his appeal, and it was arranged that several of their number should sail with him to the St Lawrence in the following spring.
The Recollets, therefore, felt confident of a friendly reception among the Hurons; and it was with buoyant hopes that Le Caron girded himself for the journey to his distant mission-field.

The corridors of the 17th century Paris convent, Les Recollets have come to life in recent months as a leading Indian scientist, Russian painter, Japanese chemist, Uruguayan pianist and Moroccan architect have taken up residence.
The convent of the religious order of Les Recollets (a mendicant order living solely on alms) was founded by Marie de Medicis in 1604.
Requisitioned during the French Revolution, it served in turn as a barrack, a spinning mill, a hospice for the elderly, a hospice for the incurable, and then a military hospital for over a century before seeing its first "artistic" assignment as a school of architecture from 1970 to 1990.

On 16 July Fathers Viel and Le Caron and Brother Sagard left the convent of the Recollets; they joined the French boats leaving for the exchange of furs, which took place that year at Cap-de-la-Victoire, at the mouth of the Rivière des Iroquois (Richelieu).
The object of this panoramic view is to establish the injustice of excluding the Recollets when Canada was returned to the French in 1632.

He was clothed with the Franciscan habit in 1679, and received the name Didace in honor of a Spanish Saint, the patron of Lay Brothers; he made his religious vows one year later, in 1680.
Because of his talent as a carpenter, he had a large part in the construction work which the Recollets of that time were undertaking.

Almost immediately the advantages that could come from converting these people to a French way of life and Catholic religion were recognized, but for many years the primary interest lay in trading with them.
Though there were few conversions initially, the Recollets did well in New France until 1624, when that year the whole mission collapsed.

The Brittany friars served the settlers from Newfoundland and visiting fishing crews while the Paris Récollets were in charge of the King's chapel and relocated Acadians with each of the two orders having their own vicar-general.
This arrangement, with two different groups of Recollets sharing responsibility for the colony, was far from harmonious and by 1716 the Récollets of the province of Brittany had replaced the Paris friars in every settlement but Port Toulouse.
The Récollets of Louisbourg were often criticized by their contemporaries, who described them as being lazy, negligent in their duties, poorly educated, and generally of little worth.
