  Encyclopedia: Record changers
As discussed generally heretofore, the record changer of the present invention is arranged to shift the speed of the turntable 56 automatically to 45 rpm when the 45 rpm adaptor 98 is positioned on the member 94 in place of the flat blade spindle 80.
However, when a record changing cycle is initiated, the cycling slide 280 moves forwardly during the initial portion of the record changing cycle and permits the pawl 478 to drop downwardly until the bottom surface of the catch portion 490 rides on the upper surface 492 of the tone arm index plate 156.
However, as the record is being moved off of the shelf 430 by the blade 418 (approximately mid cycle) the flange 384 on the pushoff slide 370 engages the edge portion 572 of the shut-off latch 510 and pivots the shutoff latch 510 about the detent pin 396 to the position shown in FIG.

Record changer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A record changer is a device that plays multiple gramophone records in sequence.
The limited playing time of 78 rpm gramophone records led to the development of record changers, which allowed stacks of several records to be loaded on a spindle and automatically played in sequence.
They typically had an extended central spindle that the records were stacked on, and an extra arm designed to hold the stack steady and detect the width of the record.

Whilst a 78rpm record is brittle and relatively easily broken, both the LP record and the 45 rpm single records are made from vinyl plastic which is flexible and unbreakable in normal use.
An analogue disc record is a flat disc with inscribed spiral grooves, in which the playback process begins with the direct mechanical motion of a stylus riding within the groove as the disc rotates.
Recording on disc as opposed to phonograph cylinder had been contemplated and experimented with by such inventors as Charles Cros, Thomas Edison, and Chichester Bell, but the first to actually develop usable disc record technology was Emil Berliner, a German working in Washington, DC, in 1884.

The Development Of Record Changers - History Of Vinyl 19p
During the 1950s the most popular music was sold in the form of a single 10inch 78-rpm record or a single 7inch 45rpm record.
The limited playing time of 78 rpm records led to the development of the record changers, that allowed stacks of several records to be loaded on a spindle and automatically played in sequence so that stacks of 7inch, 10inch or 12inch records could be played automatically.
The all mechanical mechanisms were an ingenious design, and most of them were capable of automatically measuring the size of each record as it dropped and positioning the tone arm in the lead in groove of the record.

Replay and protective disc for phonograph record changers - Patent 4123063
This will cause the record already on the turntable to be replayed as the changer cycles, while the disc remains on the spindle for one or more cycles depending on the thickness of the disc.
Aligning the keyway with with record release lever allows the disc to drop on to the turntable atop the record below it and act as a cushion between that record and the next record to drop during the change cycle.
The disc may either be entirely the same thickness as a record, the thickness of a record in the center and of greater thickness of the periphery, or entirely of a thickness substantially greater than a record.

Downstairs Records - "Your Steps to Music"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Added to the limitations of the shellac 78 discs was the quality of the automatic record changers of the day, which were quite mechanically challanged (mechanically poor quality), and routinely either broke the fragile 78 discs, chipped off large chunks from the outer edges or gouged out the 'hole' in the center of the disc.
Also, the RCA engineers designed the new 45 disc records to produce the least amount of distortion, by aligning the recorded tracks across the area of the disc which produced the least tonearm tracking error (thereby reducing the amount of sound distortion).
The automatic record changers of the day had many mechanical shortcomings - very heavy tonearm tracking weight, a tendency to jam during the reject cycle and routinely damaging the fragile 78 discs.

 Thorens TD224 Changer
To watch this changer is an almost religious experience: Powered by a second idler wheel, the changer will grab a record at the spindle hole, bring it down to the turntable, have the tonearm feel its size, and then the tonearm will set down correctly on the record.
At the end of the cycle, the record is taken and deposited on the lower arm.
The changer speed is independent of the selected turntable speed, a nice touch that not many modern changers possess.

As far as the old turntables with record changers go, I don't think they do that much damage to an older record as it seems on the surface.
If you look at records from the 60's and 70's, the outer rim of the vinyl is raised a bit on both sides.
Granted, there isn't enough space to account for warps and lots of fuzz and dirt on your records, but you should know enough to keep the tumbleweed off your records anyway and to keep them vertical to avoid warpage.

The Philco D-10 was a good record changer for its day, but of course it was 78-rpm only.
But you could install a more modern 3-speed changer if you wanted, this was a fairly common modification within a few years after these 47-1230's were built, as LP's and 45's began to take over the market in the late 40's/early 50's.
The D-10 and D-10A record changers were identical except for a different tone arm to accomodate the two different cartridges.
