Record of the Nephites - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The primary use is to describe the collection of inscribed metal plates on which the Nephites recorded their history.
The Record of the Nephites was also the manuscript title of the Book of Mormon.
The record keeper was usually a prophet, although there are some minor authors who were not.

The land southward was divided by a "narrow strip of wilderness" that ran from the "sea east" to the "sea west" (Alma 22:27).
Nephites occupied the land to the north of this wilderness, and the Lamanites, that to the south.
Zarahemla was the Nephite capital in the first century B.C. That portion of the land southward occupied by the Nephites was known as the "land of Zarahemla" (Hel.

The Record of the Nephites is a translation of the scriptural record of some of the ancient inhabitants of America.
This, of course, is one of the messages of The Record of the Nephites: that the Holy One of Israel led colonies of righteous Israelites to the land of America, prior to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Babylonian dispersion that occurred in about 587 BC.
Even more stunning evidence that confirms the historicity of the Record of the Nephites is found in the fact that there is a very high correlation between the reformed Egyptian characters of the Micmac tribe, and a small sample the characters used by the ancient Nephites.

Nephites were accused of unjust rule and suspected of schemes to deprive the Lamanites of their possessions just as Laman and Lemuel believed Nephi deprived them of their rightful pleasures.
Whosoever would not believe in the tradition of the Lamanites, but believed those records which were brought out of the land of Jerusalem, and also in the tradition of their fathers, which were correct, who believed in the commandments of God and kept them, were called the Nephites (Alma 3:11).
The record says "they were sorrowful, because of their wickedness, insomuch that they did bow down before me, and did plead with me that I would forgive them of the thing that they had done against me" (1 Nephi 7:19- 0).

This record of prophecy of the Lord is in the Hebrew language and has been preserved by the Spirit from the Jaredite language as part of three records.
The records on these plates are of The Spirit of prophecy and include prophetic writings from the Jews, and from the prophecies preserved by Mormon, who was descended from King Mosiah, from Nephi, and from Israel.
This record was taken from the Jaredite language and written in Hebrew by commandment of Christ, and is taken from a record written in sacred engravings.

The Nephites had this record in the brass plates, but the Mulekites had lost touch with their God because they had no record to teach them of the creation and His dealings with the house of Israel.

Mormon would have been writing while there was still much room on the plates, but by the time his son Moroni was finishing up his record, most of the space available for writing on the plates was already filled.
He says that these two records are a marvelous gift from the Lord to His Covenant People [D10] and are to be included in the Nephite record [D12] in Hebrew, the language of the people of Israel [D20].
Moroni had witnessed the final destruction of the Nephite civilization, and, while Mormon had abridged the record of the Nephite people almost to the end, Moroni had been given the responsibility (by the strongest commandment -- E7) for abridging the Jaredite record and recording the Nephites’ final defeat.

The Savior then commanded that the record be updated so that there would be a witness to the fulfillment of Samuel's prophecy (see 3 Nephi 23:13).
He asked Nephi to show Him the record the Nephites had kept and pointed out that the fulfillment of one of Samuel the Lamanite's prophecies had not been written about.

The first Nephi, who left Jerusalem with a small company of people led out from that city by his father, Lehi, 600 B.C., and who afterwards became their leader, prophet, and their first king-- made two sets of plates, on which he proposed engraving the history of his people.
On the "larger" of these two sets he engraved an account of his father's life, travels, prophecies, etc., together with his genealogy; and upon them also he recorded a full history of the wars and contentions of his people, as also their travels, and an account of the cities they founded and colonies they established.

It asserts that its principal author was the prophet Mormon, who compiled most of its contents in the 4th century A.D., and that Smith later translated the record by divine inspiration via a Urim and Thummim.
The crowning event of the Book of Mormon is the visitation of Christ to the Nephites around the year 34 AD (3 Nephi 11-26).

Moroni used the interpreters to translate the record and to make a copy of it on the gold plates, which he also sealed up with the interpreters, according to the commandment of God, who prophesied that they would come forth to the Gentiles at the appointed time.
The brother of Jared wrote his experiences on something, whether plates, or tablets, we don’t know, and he was also commanded to seal up the two stones along with the record, allowing a future generation to translate the record.
After His visit and the revealing of the Sealed Portion the Nephites began their golden age, followed by the dwindling in unbelief which led to their destruction.

For the Third Nephi account, Nephi supposedly recorded the text soon after the reported visit of Jesus, and this record was later abridged by Mormon, after whom the Book of Mormon is named (see 3 Nephi 16:4; 23:4; 26:7, 11).

Open Letter to an Anonymous Mormon
The Book of Mormon is suppose to be a record of a conflict between the Nephites who were the people of God and the Lamanites who were evil.
One problem is that LDS church claims that the Lamanites of the Book of Mormon are American Indians who are the descendants of the Hebrews and in particular the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh of the 6th Century B.C. Anthropologists tell us that the American Indians are Mongoloids and not Semites.
The Lamanites and the Nephites spoke the language called "reformed Egyptian." Any competent linguist will tell you that there is no correspondence between the etymology, philosophy, or phonetics of the "Hebrew" and "Egyptian" names in the Book of Mormon and languages of the American Indians.
