A recording of a speech by Lord Stanley at the 1888 Toronto Agricultural Fair and a recording of Handel's choral music from June 29 1888 at The Crystal Palace in London (the oldest surviving musical recording) are other early examples of recorded sound.
Recordings made on a cylinder remain at a constant linear velocity for the entirety of the recording, while those made on a disc have a higher linear velocity at the outer portion of the groove compared to the inner portion.

Turntable platter for record players - Patent 4535438
The most critical point of the sound reproduction chain "armgramophone record-platter-plinth" of a record player is without doubt the platter, which is still today being made of metal alloy, owing to the high resonance of sound which is a distintive property of metals.
The rotation of a gramophone record on the turntable platter is always accompanied by vibrations produced by the stylus tracking the side surfaces of the groove.
During the experiments, comparison was made of the graphs obtained by a spectrum analyser connected to the sound pickup of a record player on which were mounted both the glass-plastic platter and the metal platter.

The records were also easy to load, unlike the standard phonograph the tone arm was not lifted then lowered onto the start of the record.
Moving the tone arm over the record would start it spinning, when the bottom of the red button would hit a stop next to the turntable the button would be released and the needle would be placed in the starting groove.
As the record was finished playing the tone arm would move out of the way, that record would drop to the bottom of the spindle and the next record would start playing.

One could envision a system in which the left channel was recorded laterally, as on a monophonic recording, with the right channel information recorded with a "hill-and-dale" vertical motion; such systems were proposed but not adopted, due to their incompatibility with existing phono pickup designs (see below).
When the records were played, phase-detection circuits in the amplifiers were able to decode the signals into four separate channels.

Added to the limitations of the shellac 78 discs was the quality of the automatic record changers of the day, which were quite mechanically challanged (mechanically poor quality), and routinely either broke the fragile 78 discs, chipped off large chunks from the outer edges or gouged out the 'hole' in the center of the disc.
Also, the RCA engineers designed the new 45 disc records to produce the least amount of distortion, by aligning the recorded tracks across the area of the disc which produced the least tonearm tracking error (thereby reducing the amount of sound distortion).
The phono cartridge used in all the RCA Victor 45 RPM player models from 1949 thru 1955 are the quote 'crystal' type, which are not working today, because the Rochelle salt crystal was sensitive to heat and humidity - and, the crystal phono cartridges "died" years ago.

C) If you have "Phono Out" on your record player, you’ll need to connect your record player to an amplifier’s "Phono In" with cable type C. This is important because the "Phono" level signal is very low and is different than other CD and tape signal levels.
