In a certain light, Recovering the Satellites, the awkward, spotlit sophomore Counting Crows album, could be viewed as purposely difficult, something almost self-consciously non-commercial in the wake of August and Everything After, the Crows's first...

 Frogtown » Recovering the Satellites
I think everyone knows this, but I was touched once more last night by how vividly Adam Duritz and Counting Crows captured the truth of this on their “Recovering the Satellites” album.
I recovered it from an old stack of CDs the other day – a forgotten treasure – and I finally got to listen to it last night as I drove out to Lil’b’s place.
“Recovering the Satellites” is a beautiful album in its own right, but in a harder-edged, disillusioned vein.

Rolling Stone : Recovering The Satellites : Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Recovering the Satellites doesn't so much depart from as further develop the sound defined by the Crows on their debut.
For reasons not especially clear, the 14 tracks on Recovering the Satellites are divided into four sections, an example of the pretensions that occasionally afflict the Crows.
"It's a lifetime commitment/Recovering the satellites," Duritz declares in the title track, and that assertion is the beginning of an important wisdom: You combat the transience of the world by making sure that what you create has the integrity to last.

For their second album, Recovering the Satellites [+], Counting Crows [+] crafted a self-consciously challenging response to their unexpected success.
Similarly, the music is slightly more somber, yet the approach is harder and more direct, which gives even the ballads a more affecting, visceral feel.
Recovering the Satellites [+] occasionally bogs down in its own pretention -- for a roots-rock band, the group certainly has a lot of artsy goals -- yet when they scale back their ambitions to simple folk-rock, such as on the single "A Long December," they are at their most articulate.

I'd purchased Recovering the Satellites out of my own pocket and, since the station hadn't received a copy for on-air play, I thought I'd slip it into a "Love It or Shove It" segment and see if the public interest could persuade the station brass to track down a studio copy.
For an album that boasts half a dozen songs everyone has heard on the radio at one point or another, it's difficult to discern exactly why some of Recovering the Satellites' songs hit and some missed, and some were overlooked completely.
However, the string-and-organ intro is still catchy as hell, which pretty much sums up the whole of Recovering the Satellites: even at its worst, it's filled with solid (if overwrought) musicianship and that escapist quality that only Duritz himself can offer -- the ability to turn drunken self-hatred into a parlor game.

INKPOT MUSIC REVIEWS: COUNTING CROWS Recovering The Satellites (1996)
Jones" ("When everybody loves you, son, that's about as funky as you can be"), RECOVERING THE SATELLITES shows a desire to leave it all behind and become anonymous again.
But in their evocation of the hollowness of Hollywood life, they fall short of capturing it with full effect because all the songs are very personal and subjective.
RECOVERING THE SATELLITES is perhaps a personal critique of the fame and glamour of Hollywood, but for a real critical picture of the whole fast life scene, perhaps the Eagles album HOTEL CALIFORNIA best captures the essence of how fame is easily won and then just as easily lost.

Pop Stops Review of Counting Crows —Recovering The Satellites
Recovering The Satellites debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts last month, and it includes all of the hallmarks that established the Crows as one of the most interesting bands of the decade with August.
From the piano oblivion of "Miller's Angels" to the breezy bebop of "Another Horsedreamer's Blues" to the guitar frenzy of "Angels of the Silences," this is truly a triumph of a return.
There are 14 songs on Recovering the Satellites, and it's hard to find a fault in any of them.

Recovering the Satellites may not be quite the tower of song that the Crows' debut August and Everything After was, but it could hardly be called a sophomore slump.
In comparison to their other two studio albums, it comes across as a Sophomoric turd-burger sandwiched between the beautiful gems of musical bread that is "August and Everything After" and "This Desert Life." "Recovering The Satellites" shows the Crows trying to stretch their sound to the netherlands of a harder rocking sound.
It seemed like it took forever for this album to be released, and it just about was (3 years), but it was worth the wait.

 JustOneMinute: Recovering The Satellites
The Defense Department on Thursday released a satellite photograph taken on March 17 that shows two trucks parked outside one of the 56 bunkers at the al Qaqaa complex, and Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld said U.S. reconnaissance would have detected any major effort to loot the complex.
I was citing it mainly for the satellite images at the top to illustrate that the Pentagon knew about this place and was likely to keep it under some sort of surveillance.
