Since recovery efforts began in 1999, island foxes have bred successfully in captive breeding facilities on both San Miguel Island and Santa Rosa Island.
The park recently released a draft recovery plan for island foxes on the northern Channel Islands, and in June the park will host an annual meeting of experts and agencies concerned with the continued preservation of this now-rare species.
In its draft island fox recovery plan, released in March 2001, the park prescribed a ten-year captive breeding program to return island fox numbers to levels high enough to avoid extinction and allow wild fox populations to persist over time.
