 What is Smart Growth?
Planning for smart growth encompasses six broad areas: comprehensive growth planning, mixed land use zoning, design and planning for increased residential density, design for street connectivity, innovation in water infrastructure provision, and enhancement of public service facilities, including recreational areas.
Comprehensive planning is deemed to be "smart" in light of its utilization of existing infrastructure and its potential contributions to reducing automobile use and energy consumption; its inclusiveness and inherently regional logic and character; and integrating housing, economic development, and transportation elements.
Smart growth housing policies tend to promote alternatives to the postwar standards of the stand-alone single family home in income-segregated areas.

Smart Growth and Walkable Development   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
mart growth is a regional strategy for development that seeks to recreate traditional walkable neighborhoods through a diverse mix of land uses, compact development, and pedestrian-friendly physical design.
In both existing and new growth areas, infrastructure outlays are also minimized due to the compact nature of neighborhoods, and infrastructure costs per unit are lower because costs can be spread over more units.
Smart growth seeks to remedy the problems of sprawl through a holistic approach that integrates planning at multiple levels, from the region down to the neighborhood.

 Smart Growth Conference - Handouts
Neo-traditionalists and many smart growth advocates argue that a new type of land development pattern is needed, one that is more concentrated and that creates a quality of neighborhood that consumers feel comfortable living in.
Perhaps we are moving into an era of "smarter growth" where public policy encourages more compact and integrated land uses to accomplish a number of contemporary public interests, such as the reduction of car travel and air pollution and the rate of consumption of farmland, natural resources, and environmentally sensitive areas.
Growth control measures, including goals, objectives, and techniques contained in the comprehensive plan, were validated nearly thirty years ago by the Court of Appeals in Golden v.

During previous operations doctors rebuilt the interior of her nose and inserted metal plates to reconstruct her lower eye sockets as well as a plate to recreate the joint that allows her to open and close her mouth.

The primary task of growth group members is to learn as much as possible about the way they relate to each of the other members in the group.
Thus, growth groups have an interpersonal focus and are especially appropriate for individuals who are interested in working on interpersonal issues and skills (e.g., connecting with others, communicating effectively, expressing your feelings, supporting others, asserting yourself, and getting feedback about how you come across to others).
Within a growth group members are given the opportunity to express thoughts and feelings, give and receive feedback, and observe how others respond in different ways to the same events or situation.

I applaud the attempt to recreate old-growth characteristics in some high graded forests.
I would caution, however, that large trees that are large through intensive management of growth rates are not the same as large trees that are large due to centuries of slow growth.
It is well known that trees that grow faster do not live as long, so a potential problem with "managed" old-growth is that it will probably not be old-growth for very long.

The process of spiritual growth sometimes seems paradoxical because we speak of struggle and effort as well as of allowing, accepting, and letting go.
Once we have involved ourselves in the process of personal growth, we understand that whatever is occurring in the present moment is what we need to deal with right now.
A major obstacle to regular practice is the expectation of the personality that we attain specific personal growth results, and, ironically, this is especially true if we have made significant breakthroughs in our spiritual growth.

"The provision for true old growth should be regarded as an essential activity of forestry, just as the provision for wood, wildlife, recreation, and water."
Old-growth forests can be compared to similar but harvested forests, and conclusions can be reached about the effect of harvest on soils, plant and animal life, the rate of tree growth, and many other parts of a forest's ecology.
A second value of old-growth forests to modern forest management is to recreate in scattered locations the conditions found in Minnesota's forests of the 1850's, before large-scale commercial logging began.
