Reculver is a summer resort situated about 3 miles east of Herne Bay along the North Kent coast and is popular with visitors.

Despite being in their infancy and the fact they’re from Kent, Reculver could easily share the bill with Puddle Of Mudd, 100 Reasons, Nickelback or other giants of the US college rock scene.
So strong is this track – and the hype already surrounding them having had airplay on Radio 1 and 2 – that you will without doubt see Reculver posters adorning the walls of thousands in years to come; haven’t they done well.

 United Benefice - St. Mary’s Church History
It was at Reculver some 400 years later that an early Christian chantry (monk's chapel) was established by St Augustine's pilgrims from Rome, whose mission it was to plant a church on the pagan isles of Britain.
The east windows were commissioned in 1924 and depict St. Augustine (founder of the first chantry at Reculver) and St. Nicholas (patron saint of seafarers) recalling the long history of Reculver Towers as a navigation mark.
A superb window in the sanctuary to the left of the altar was donated in 1935 and depicts the life of St. Francis of Assisi and his association with animals and birds.

At Reculver this morning there were 2 Little Grebes, 32 Mute Swans, 1 Brent Goose, 10 Mallard, 12 Teal, 21 Wigeon, 7 Shoveler, 11 Gadwall, 12 Tufted Duck, 5 Pochard and 10 Coot.
On the seawall there was a male and female Stonechat, and when I returned to the car park the 4 Snow Buntings flew up to the rocks from the grass by the visitors' centre.
A quick walk inland from Reculver this evening in cold, blustery and snowy conditions produced only the usual waterbirds but in lower than usual numbers.

 Reculver Information
Originally called Regulbium, the fort guarded the north end of what were then the broad waters of the Wantsum Channel, which separated the Isle of Thanet from the rest of Kent and along which passed Roman galleys.
An early Saxon church was constructed on the site of the abandoned Roman fort in 669 when Egbert, King of Kent, granted land for the foundation of a monastery.
A legend persists whereby it is reported there is often heard the sound of a crying baby in the grounds of the fort and Church ruins.

 Gallery - Walking Reculver
Post 3 days of booze at GBBF, a short walk was in order - Starting at Reculver on the north coast, and travelling east along the Thanet Coastal Path for a mile or so towards Birchington, then a circular route heading inland, totalling about 7-8 miles.
Nice scenery and easy walking - concrete paths for the first half and decent footpaths and minor roads for the second - took about 3 hours in total.
Also spotted some decent beaches along this part of the coast (albeit stony), and the church remains in Reculver are worth a look.

Reculver looked beautiful in the early morning light, with the two towers of the church glowing in the light.
It was when I went down to the wall that I realised I had been here before - over ten years before I had been doing a Geological Engineering degree at QMW in London, and this course involved geology field trips.

 Visiting the Stour Valley
The geology of the sandstone cliffs is fascinating, and visitors can see how erosion and coastal protection has shaped this landscape.
It was the threat of cliff erosion that persuaded local people to demolish their parish church in the 19th century, leaving only the towers, as a guide to ships.

The name of the Roman station at Reculver is first mentioned in the Notitia Dignitatum of the late-4th / early-5th centuries.
The only evidence we have which identifies the Roman garrison of Reculver is the above entry from a 4th/5th century document.
The regiment is a cohors peditata quingenaria, a unit of foot soldiers nominally five-hundred strong, which were originally recruited from among the Baetasii of Lower Germany; this tribe inhabited the lowlands between the Maas and the Rhine, their capital city being Novaesium now Neuss in modern West Germany.

Kent based band Reculver on the other hand look as if they are old enough to have caught the Nirvana whirlwind when it last blew through these shores.
The problem is that although Reculver may have been able to copy the quiet/loud dynamic from Nirvana they have none of the songwriting skill.
This is closer to the dreadful leaden rock of Nickelback or, even worse, the one hit wonders that were Stiltskin.

It is said to have stood on a promontory which pushed out into the Thames estuary and carried a signal station or even lighthouse before coastal erosion took its toll.
This river enabled small boats to pass between to Reculver, Richborough, Hoath, Fordwich and Canterbury in Roman times as Reculver was an early Claudian bridgehead.
It seems they were initially garrisoned at Cumberland before being moved down to Reculver around 200AD as the threat shifted from the northern tribes of Britannia to the raiders from the Friesian Islands, Holland and northern Germany (the Saxons) increased.
