Saturday Night Live (SNL) is a weekly late-night ninety-minute live comedy-variety show which has been on NBC since 1975.
Some sketches which survived the cut because of their premise but otherwise needed a lot of work are rewritten completely.
Sketches and other segments are given labels which are put on index cards and put on the board in the order of their performance.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) is a weekly late-night 90-minute comedy-variety show from NBC which has been broadcast virtually every Saturday night since its debut on October 11, 1975.
The show continues with more comedy skits (sketches might feature recurring characters, running gags, celebrity impersonations, movie and TV spoofs, and skits parodying the news issues of the day), followed by a performance by the guest musical act.
NBC executives were furious, and the sketch was thought to be the reason why Franken was not considered to replace Lorne Michaels at the end of the season.

For instnace, in the "Sinatra Group" sketch (this one's my favorite), his role as 2 Live Crew star is sadly limited, as Phil Hartman shines as Frank Sinatra (though to be fair, Sinatra is supposed to be the main focus).

The sight of "Live" crawling on all fours out of the starting gate is a painful one for fans who have an emotional attachment to a show that in its better years defined what TV sketch comedy could be.
Meanwhile, the sketch writer says, he's mystified at the behemoth show's weakness given that the city's sketch comedy scene - which, ironically, is full of talent that was inspired by the show's better years - has never been stronger.
Why "Saturday Night Live," which can attract any talent it wants, isn't a thousand times better is a source of some headscratching for those who bewail the show's lameness.

Saturday night may seem an odd night in which to wage a war for TV viewership.
The addition of the animated "Saturday TV Funhouse" with its rude cartoons like "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" is often the only high point in an otherwise laughless night.
Sketches like the Claymation parodies of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (crossed with Apocalypse Now last Christmas and The Godfather the year before) have already become TV classics.

It managed to take the sketch-comedy characters from the confines of their one set out into the real world without missing a beat, and they were surrounded with a quality supporting cast (most notably, a note-perfect Rob Lowe).
The insistence that these characters have enough meat to become film characters is symptomatic of the recurring-character-based trend of the last few years.
The heavy reliance on recurring characters these days runs the double-risk of the character overstaying his welcome and taking up space where new-concept sketches could hit bigger than tired retreads of old characters.

Each recurring skit was indistinguishable from the last in terms of the characters (Mary Catherine Gallagher always trips and falls and puts her fingers under her arms, the Cheerleaders always cheer where they don't belong, Marion Barry's always on crack, etc.).
Saturday night Live goes through it's periods of funniness and unfunniness but I think one of the funniest sketches was when they had Christopher Walken on pretending to be this gigalo-type character with a fake mustache.
Saturday Night Live has blown from the moment it first hit the airwaves, and seeing now is like being jabbed in both eyes with a pair of red hot letter openers.

When people think of sketch comedy, the 800-pound gorilla that usually comes to mind is "Saturday Night Live." From the John Belushi, Jane Curtain years through Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy’s tenures to the Adam Sandler and Chris Rock epoch and now on to… honestly, I don’t know.
The sketches, which are for the most part stand-alone entities, are presented at breakneck speed by the Players.
Though each sketch is seemingly unconnected to the rest, there is a sort of tenuous, meta plot that acts as a framework for the show.

The scene looked normal at first, but almost immediately he began yelling maniacally at his kids offscreen (communicating with unseen characters became a trademark of recurring characters from this point on), warning them to "Get off the shed!" or else he would put the hurt on them.
The Celebrity Jeopardy sketches were written more sharply in its earlier days, and by this point much of the humor would come from unnecessary name-calling of Trebek's mother by Connery.
In time, the sketch focused soley on Ferrell and Kattan as the Brothers Butabi, who would often hit on female hosts playing characters of their pursuits.

He was one of the show's most vesatile performers of the classic 1986-93 years, creating a wide range of classic characters and dead on impressions.

The rest of tonight’s episode was filled with average sketches demonstrating how most of the cast are either still searching for stand-out ideas or have simply given up.
This might be a long shot, but I would love to see, just once, the writers come up with sketch ideas that are funny and clever in their own right, instead of lousy, yet safe, bullshit material that’s based solely on what they think the host can pull off.
It’ll be interesting to see the extreme differences between the truly clever sketch writing that stood on its own feet, no matter who the host was, to the lazy, Hollywood gossip crap that we’re subjected to today.

The opening sequence of this video, a lively and hilarious parody of a contentious Ross Perot press conference, immediately makes one wonder whether the public, when recalling Perot's 1992 presidential campaign, remembers Perot himself or Dana Carvey's dead-on impression of the eccentric billionaire.
Some sketches, such as one featuring the misbegotten character Massive Head Wound Harry, may make you wonder how it wound up on this tape, but for the most part this is very impressive collection of Carvey's best work.

Like many of the clips that make up the bulk of its content, the Saturday Night Live 25th Anniversary special suffers from that malady specific to almost every SNL sketch: it starts out brilliantly, loses steam about halfway through, then slowly but gamely limps to the finish line with occasional spurts of humor.
A show like "Saturday Night Live" definitely deserves a special like the one it got for its 25th anniversary special.
