When Futurama was first aired on Fox it was, and in some cases still is, labeled as “The Simpsons in space.” This is for a variety of reasons, the foremost being Matt Groening’s involvement: he, of course, was the creator of both shows.
The artistic style of the characters in both shows exhibit similarities and the humor has the same sort of witty bite that The Simpsons had, even if the subject matter is wildly different.
The characters are very strong and are all given a chance to develop in the first season.

Locus Online: Lucius Cook reviews Futurama on DVD
A recurring motif in the earlier shows is Fry's innocent, Candide-like joy in interacting with his strange new world; the fact that Bender is a borderline sociopath and ex-felon doesn't detract from Fry's bliss at fulfilling his childhood dream of having a robot for his best friend.
Where Futurama succeeds as SF is the way the writers develop and explore their story ideas in a self-consistent and intelligent manner.
Skeptics and holdouts owe it to themselves to check it out: Futurama was clearly conceived by people who had SF literature in their hearts and minds, and it deserves to find a place in the hearts and minds of fans who'll get all the jokes.

 Futurama
Set in the year 3000, Futurama is the acme of sci-fi animated sitcom from Simpsons creator Matt Groening.
While not as universally popular as The Simpsons, Futurama is equally hip and hilarious, thanks to its zippy lateral-thinking contemporary pop cultural references, celebrity appearances (Pamela Anderson and Leonard Nimoy are among a number of guest stars to appear as disembodied heads in jars), and Bender, a distinctly Homer Simpson-esque robot.
Part of Futurama's charm is that with decades of sci-fi junk behind us, we've effectively been living with the distant future for years and can now have fun with it.

Futurama is probably one of the greatest animated series that never got the attention it deserved.

Being a sci-fi spoof, this series has a more focused agenda than the present-day exploits of the denizens of Springfield, and its cast of recurring characters is not as broad (at least, not yet), but then The Simpsons has had more than ten years to establish itself.
Futurama comes into its own with its other major characters: Bender, the hard-drinking, kleptomaniac droid with attitude; Doctor Zoidberg, the crustacean physician with a woeful lack of knowledge about human anatomy; and the elderly Professor Farnsworth.
One thing that Futurama definitely has over The Simpsons is the quality of its animation.
