Recycling of PET Bottles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Recycling of PET Bottles is the activity whereby bottles made out of PET are collected, sorted and processed in order to reuse the material out of which they are made.
In many countries, PET plastics are coded with the number 1 which is found inside the universal recycling symbol, usually located on the bottom of the container.
PET is used as a raw material for making packaging materials such as bottles and containers for packaging a wide range of food products and other consumer goods.

Motivations for recycling include environmental concerns, as recycling reduces the use of energy and raw materials and the need to dispose of waste, and for cost reasons, in situations where production from recycled material is less expensive than from new material.
As a result, state support for recycling may be more expensive than alternatives such as landfill; recycling efforts in New York City cost $57 million per year.
Refillable bottles are used extensively in many European countries; for example in Denmark, 98% of bottles are refillable, and 98% of those are returned by consumers.

Recycling is the collection of used materials that would otherwise be waste to be broken down and remade into new products.
Motivations for recycling include environmental sustainability and business economics: sustainability because the reused material both prevents waste and reduces the consumption of new raw materials, and economics because it can be cheaper to produce new products from reused or recycled materials.

In an article entitled "Plastic bottle recycling rate keeps sliding" (August 24, 1998) Steve Toloken reported that one of NAPCOR's solutions to declining PET bottle recovery is to "double the 3,500 bottle-shaped recycling bins they are placing at spots where single-serve soft drink bottles are sold".
This so-called solution to the problem of falling PET bottle recycling rates is no solution at all.
Of course, an easier and more fool-proof solution would be a national bottle bill, which would more than double the PET soft drink container recycling rate from the current 36 percent to 75 percent.
