Ames was a solid contributor to the 1911-12 pennant-winners, taking his turn in the rotation in cool weather and pitching in relief as temperatures rose.
Red started regularly in Cincinnati and pitched well for a couple of years, hurling a career-high 297 innings in 1914 when he posted a 15-23 record and contributed a league-leading six saves.
The Phillies returned Red Ames to St. Louis after the 1919 season, but the Cardinals gave him his unconditional release when he was involved in a serious automobile accident during the off-season.

Ames was a third or fourth starter for the New York Giants during their early period of dominance under John McGraw.
He pitched in three World Series total with the Giants (1905, 1911, 1912) but because he was only a third or fourth starter in a era when top pitchers pitched more games than they do today, he appeared almost entirely in relief, making only one start in 1911, which he lost.
