Many great movies have predictable stories, of course, and there is much that is interesting about Red Beard's structure, namely its willingess to abandon its main narrative arc for longish periods to fill in subplots which have more of a tonal, thematic relationship to the main story than a causal one.

"Red Beard" is the noble conclusion to Kurosawa's monochrome period which undoubtedly contained his finest work.
There are constant reminders that medicine was at a rudimentary stage in its development and of the dedication needed by pioneers at a time when most answers still remained unknown and everything was largely a matter of easing rather than curing.

Lego Set Review: 6289 - Red Beard Runner
The Red Beard Runner is a two-masted ship whose most distinctive feature is the rear end of the ship that looks like a skull.
Other unique elements in the set include the cloth jolly roger banner with a red border (I see this will be used again in 1997 models) and a white smooth-top half-arch brick.
With the Red Beard Runner, the cannons sit in their bases alone and slide back and forth in 2-stud-wide grooves, but to turn the cannons around, the cannon must be physically lifted out of the groove and turned around to face out the other side of the ship.

 Red Beard - Movie Review
Red Beard is a major miss in Kurosawa's distinguished career, a three-hour opus that can be best described as a protracted retelling of General Hospital in 19th century Japan.
The script is all over the map, and while the direction is capable and full of flourish, it's hard to notice under the weight of the leaden story.
As the final collaboration between Kurosawa and Mifune, Red Beard often finds a sentimental home in the hearts of their fans.

This is a small thing but it is something, and that is the sort of gain that Red Beard tries to achieve at his clinic.
