Red Bird Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Red Bird Records was a record label started by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
The Shangri-Las recording contract and catalog was sold in a separate deal to Mercury Records.
Among the artists who released records on Red Bird were The Dixie Cups (Chapel of Love, People Say), The Shangri-Las (Leader of the Pack, Remember Walking In the Sand, I Can Never Go Home Any More), The Tradewinds (New York Is A Lonely Town), and The Jelly Beans (I Wanna Love Him So Bad).

His first record label, Tico Records, was formed in the late 1940s.
Red Bird only lasted two years as Leiber & Stoller wanted to get out of the record business and Goldner again developed big gambling debts which led the Mob to occupy the Red Bird offices.
The Red Bird catalogue (except for releases by The Shangri-Las) were sold to Morris Levy's Roulette Records.

Ellie Greenwich was one of the most successful song writers of the sixties, but she also had a fairly successful career as a singer in her own write.
Beginning as a solo recording artist, she later became a member of "dummy" recording groups like the Raindrops, the Popsicles, and the Butterflys.
Red Bird seemed very happy with the group’s debut, and it received quite a bit of promotion.

After recording these sides, the Dixie Cups' manager abruptly moved them to ABC, where their New Orleans edge was quickly dropped in favor of straight-ahead pop.

The Shangri-Las - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In April of 1964, since the girls were still minors, their parents signed for them with Red Bird Records; Mary was 15, Betty was 17, and the Ganser twins were 16.
Their songs for Morton featured lavish production with heavy orchestration and sound effects; their biggest hit, the renowned death disc "Leader of the Pack" (US #1, UK #11), climaxes with the sounds of roaring motorcycles and breaking glass.
In 1966, the Shangri-Las' subsequent two releases on Red Bird failed to make the top 50.

 The Shangri-Las!
Most likely the very first recording the girls did was at one of their local club performances with a tune called "Simon Says", a cross between "Bo Diddley" and "Willie And The Hand Jive".
The girls, not discouraged that the record didn't hit big, but having this notch and maybe some clout that it carried in the local club scene, forged ahead with their area performances, and also their scholastic duties, not knowing what fate again had in store for them.
Team Red Bird at this time was comprised of owners Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, and George Goldner, and engineers and arrangers Brooks Arthur, Tommy Dowd, and Artie Butler.

It also was a huge boost to Red Bird, which a short time later would become the home of another enormously successful girl group from New York City, the Shangri-Las.
When there was a pause in one of their recording sessions, the girls began a chanting song that they had heard and learned from their mother, Barbara, called Iko Iko.
Again, the chant was sung with some percussion in the background, on ashtrays, and when they recorded it, it became their final top forty record, in the Spring of 1965.

 The Shangri-Las
The quality of Morton's work with the Shangri-Las on Red Bird was remarkable considering that he had virtually no prior experience in the music business.
To record "Leader Of The Pack" a motorcycle was brought into the hall just outside the recording studio and the sound of its revving engine was incorporated into the mix, along with that of a motorcycle crash toward the end of the song.
Red Bird went out of business in 1966 and the Shangri-Las did some work for Mercury but could never duplicate their earlier success.

 The Shangri-Las Biography
Let's not forget that Red Bird was a small independent label, so their acts didn't have the advantages of some of the major labels or for that matter some of the larger independent labels such as Motown.
Around late April of 1965 Red Bird released "Out In The Streets", a Greenwich and Barry composition, which in a way could be a follow up to Gene Pitney's composition "He's A Rebel" recorded by The Blossoms under The Crystals name.
The move to Mercury Records may have appeared as a good idea at the time, for the girls and Shadow, but once there, The Shangri-Las were no longer in the family-type atmosphere of a small independent label, but just another group or number on the huge Mercury roster.

Originally setting out to be a recording star, Jeff Barry became one of the most respected pop songwriters within the Brill Building complex of the '60s, not an easy accomplishment considering the fact that Barry's in-house competion included Neil Diamond, Carol King and Neil Sedaka.
Largely regarded by pop afficianados as the mecca for the "girl group" sound, the staff at Red Bird, which also included producer George "Shadow" Morton, produced tightly crafted, musically sophisticated songs that were the pop equivalent of the kind of rock operas the Who would later write.
Barry and Greenwich continued to write hit records throughout the '60s such as the seminal "River Deep, Mountain High" and the Beach Boys 1969 hit "I Can Hear Music," their songs changing with the times, but still retaining the essence of their earlier Brill Building days.

After bringing Barry "Remember (Walking in the Sand)," Morton was hired as a staff producer for Red Bird Records, the independent label run by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in the mid-1960s.
It was on Red Bird that the Shangri-Las made their numerous fine hit and non-hit singles.
Morton claimed in Goldmine, for instance, that Greenwich did not hear the "Leader of the Pack" single (which she wrote with Jeff Barry and Morton) until it was on the radio, and that he gave Greenwich and Barry some writing and production credits to give them "a piece of the action"; Greenwich hotly contests this.

Leiber and Stoller's mid-60s record label (actually labels, including Red Bird, Blue Cat, and others), fueled by the writing, producing and A&R of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, was one of the most vital sources of original girl-group music.
At a time when the Beatles were set to obliterate the concept of producers, songwriters and singers collaborating to bring a record to fruition, Red Bird showed just how powerful and fulfilling such an arrangement could be.
