Crayolas Get A Name Change - Collectors Universe Library - Collectors.com : The Ultimate Collectors Destination
Crayola, ever in support of teachers suggestions since the inception of the product in 1903, responded to complaints that students thought the name, Indian Red, described the skin color of American Indians.
Crayola immediately responded to the first grumblings with the actual origins of the name -- it is based on a reddish-brown pigment commonly found near India, hence the name.
Crayolas were first introduced in 1903 when Binney & Smith representatives were showing their new school products, slate pencils and dustless chalk, in local schools.

Record Review (Detroit Metro Times)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The legendary Red Crayola band was originally an obtuse psychedelic trio that emerged fully formed deep in the heart of Texas in 1966.
This challenging two-CD set reveals the Red Crayola guys to be classic avant-gardists who used conventional rock instrumentation as a potent musical weapon.
While not overtly political, the Crayola's sonic exhibitionism was clearly a robust social statement reflecting a dire need to break down the barriers and stereotypes that our country's counterculture had already unconsciously devised.

The Red Crayola have spent most of their long and varied history as the Red Krayola.
They were signed to Lelan Rogers' International Artists label in 1967 and cut their first LP early that year, assisted by guests such as Roky Erickson (on organ), and Tommy Smith replacing Barthelme.
The group's sound was one of the bolder, less obviously commercial psychedelic incarnations of the era, which was precisely what Thompson had in mind and began the process of building him his multi-generational audience and history as the Red Krayola.

The album's title track was a tape loop of electronic sounds with musical improvisations layered on top of it, a sound that foreshadowed the Red Crayola's second recording.
During this period, the band performed a concert in Berkeley, California where they attached a contact microphone to a sheet of aluminium foil that was set under a block of melting ice.
In 1995, Drag City released 1967's Coconut Hotel LP and in 1998 issued The Red Crayola Live 1967 with material from the Angry Arts Festival and Berkeley Folk Music Festival including their live collaboration with John Fahey.

The first two Red Crayola (thanks to prompt objections from the manufacturer, the name was quickly changed, in America at least, to Red Krayola) records couldn't be more different.
Red Crayola then faded into limbo until turning up to do sessions in 1976 with the Art and Language organization, which yielded the demos collected on Corrected Slogans; the album parallels somewhat the serious/silly music of Robert Wyatt.
Uniting Red Crayola's flower-power garage music with modernistic, fragmented arrangements and a fierce, broken beat, the album centers on cynical military themes.

Red Krayola offers something new for fans   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Mayo Thompson's Red Krayola has been shattering musical preconceptions since the late `60s when the band, (then known as Red Crayola) recorded a legendary mixture of free-form noise and groundbreaking psychedelia, titled Parable of Arable Land.
A few of the tracks make it sound as though the Red Krayola has sold out and tried to record an album of commercially acceptable pop.
But after a few listens, the band's familiar high level of risk-taking emerges, and it becomes clear that by using pop conventions, the band is subverting them, just as it has subverted traditional notions of album and lyrical structure on all of its previous records.

The Red Crayola were one of the greatest psychedelic bands of the 1960s and probably of all times.
Thompson veniva dal free-jazz, aveva militato in un gruppo di folk satirico, ed era vissuto fra i folk-singer del luogo, prima di formare nel 1966 i Red Crayola.
After a long hiatus, Mayo Thompson recruited a new crew to record a Red Crayola album, Introduction (Drag City, 2006): guitarist and vocalist Stephen Prina, Tom Watson (of Slovenly), drummer John McEntire (of Tortoise), accordionist Charlie Abel, bassist Noel Kupersmith.

marathonpacks: now with more zeitgeist!: The Red Krayola "Psy Ops"
For those that need a Krayola primer, they were originally "Red Crayola," but duh, had to change that shit, and came up in the same Texas-psych swamp as 13th Floor Elevators (same label too, I think).
But the skronky, alarmist guitar of "Psy Ops" (mp3), with Thompson's calm, dark incantations ("I go sometimes where cigarettes are food") and John McIntire's (Tortoise) steady drumming demonstrate that, despite some pretty serious advances in recording technology, we're hearing what we always should have been hearing from the Krayola, gawd bless.
I've been a fan of Red Krayola for more a decade - though they can definately be taxing to listen to at times, the moments of brilliance make it all well worht the effort.

 redkrayola
Perhaps the longest running underground rock band, the Red Krayola (alternately spelled Red Crayola) were formed in Houston as a trio in 1966.
Along with fellow Texans 13th Floor Elevators, and emerging groups like the Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, Mayo Thompson’s sonic experimentalism was viewed as a rejection of the prevalent “summer of love” sound of the time.
As the Red Krayola moved into its third decade, Thompson’s unusual approach to songwriting and clever word play would fit perfectly with another new set of collaborators: England’s visual arts collective Art and Language.

The Seattle Times: Arts & Entertainment: The Red Krayola: the kolor of musik
Forty years ago, the manufacturer of Crayola crayons sent Thompson and his band mates, Steve Cunningham and Frederick Barthelme, a cease-and-desist order, insisting the Texas psychedelic rockers change the name of their group, The Red Crayola.
Though the first edition of the band broke up in the late '60s, The Red Krayola's reputation has done nothing but grow in the intervening years, thanks to its noisy experimentalism, acerbic humor and Thompson's guiding hand.
The band's most recent disc, "Introduction," was released in April, and though it presents a relatively kinder, gentler, even accessible Red Krayola, the antic spirit is alive and well.

On its first album, THE PARABLE OF ARABLE LAND, Red Crayola linked rock songs with bursts of frenzied group improvisations called "Free Form Freak Outs." Their live sets were said to have consisted solely of noise, and this set provides the proof.
The tracks recorded in hotel rooms and with John Fahey are considerably more sedate, similar to the instrumentals on the lost COCONUT HOTEL album (also issued by Drag City).

Red Crayola was one of the freakiest bands of the 1960s, and that's no mean feat.
