Red Crystal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Red Crystal is a politically and religiously neutral emblem approved by the states party to the Geneva Conventions.
The Red Crystal was created as a compromise to satisfy the desire of the Israeli humanitarian society, the Magen David Adom, or "Red Shield of David," to avoid the use of the Red Cross or the Red Crescent, both of which Israelis find offensive.

Telegraph | News | Neutral crystal symbol may join traditional Red Cross emblems
Moreover, the International Committee of the Red Cross would use the red crystal instead of the red cross in areas of religious conflict where its emblem might be taken as a Christian symbol.
The emblem was the reverse of the Swiss flag, a long-standing symbol of neutrality.
For decades they drew the line at the red cross, the red crescent and the red lion and sun, but the latter was abandoned by Iran after the Islamic revolution in 1979.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has welcomed the decision of the diplomatic conference held in Switzerland in December 2005 to adopt a third protocol additional to the Geneva Conventions, creating the red crystal emblem, alongside the red cross and red crescent.
The red cross and red crescent emblems are universally recognized symbols of assistance for the victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters.

BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Red Cross mulls 'neutral' emblem
Red Cross officials hope approval of a third emblem will finally put an end to decades of controversy over the issue.
At the moment, the only two emblems recognised under the Geneva conventions are the red cross and the red crescent; relief workers and ambulances bearing these symbols are protected under international law.
Now that the MDA has agreed to work with the Palestinian Red Crescent in the occupied territories, some are suggesting that a similar agreement is necessary for the Golan heights.

 Enter the red crystal
Subsequently the Standing Commission of t he Red Cross and Red Crescent took up the issue, and in 1999 at the International Conference of t he Red Cross and R ed Crescent, governments and National Societies called for a comprehensive and lasting solution to the question of the emblem.
But the red crystal creates a new option that was not there before — the possibility for a National Society to use both those emblems and to change its name to incorporate both ‘Red Cross’ and ‘Red Crescent’.
In the longer term, the adoption of the red crystal should end the danger of proliferation of the emblems and the fear that such a trend would weaken their essential role: protection on the battlefield.

The debate in Geneva this week about whether to let Magen David Adom into the International Committee of the Red Cross is a classic example of genteel anti-Semitism, at least on the part of the cultured Swiss.
But Syria threw a last-minute firebomb into the polite halls of Geneva Tuesday by asking that its Red Crescent squads be allowed into the Golan Heights to care for "Syrians" there the way Israel and the Palestinians have reached an agreement to respect each other's organizations.
Muslim countries couldn't stomach the Red Cross any more than Israel could many years later, and the Arab world, led by the Ottoman Empire, pretty much adopted the crescent early in the 20th century (this, by the way, comes from the Red Cross's own website).

 The Revealer: Red Crystal
Diplomats from 192 countries are meeting to discuss a third symbol (the Red Star of David is not officially recognized) that could be used by the International Red Cross as a recognized neutral ambulance emblem that would guarantee rescue workers safe access to victims in war zones or disaster areas.
The meeting comes after decades of contention over the symbols, with many Arab nations refusing to sign on to the recognition of the Red Star of David, and even now complaining that the compromise "Red Crystal" symbol is an unfair accommodation of Israel.
If the Red Crystal is approved, it could have larger -- at least symbolically larger -- implications for Red Cross International, allowing countries that desire a more religion-neutral emblem to use it instead of the Cross or Crescent.

Inside Israel, the red Star of David is the symbol of the MDA; outside Israel, the MDA will use either an empty crystal or one with a Star of David inside it.
It is no coincidence that, after over half a century of tolerating the rejection of the Star of David, the Red Cross has itself in recent years found it increasingly difficult to operate, and began to seek cover.
Though the crystal is being portrayed as the solution to a general problem, namely places where one symbol or another is not tolerated, in practice the intolerance flows almost entirely in one direction: from the Muslim world against the Star of David and, recently, against the Red Cross too.
