In 1991, before this river's brown trout population was "boosted" with hatchery and transplant fish from the Bow River, the "official" redd count was set at 43 that year for the known locations in the redd survey area.
The pre-existing population in the Red Deer was thought to have essentially two origins: those few that called the pre-Dickson Dam home in the then muddy river and those that escaped through the dam's outflow after some 67,100 browns were stocked into Glennifer Lake (formed by the Dickson Dam) in 1984.
In the Red Deer River, however, it is his assessment that this number is not vastly different due to the highly concentrated numbers in obvious, known locations.
