Sunsets: appear in a variety of colors
Because of the refraction of sunlight by the atmosphere itself, the sun will appear to be higher in the sky than it actually is. The combination of refraction and scattering of sunlight by atmospheric particles is responsible for producing twilight, the brightness in the sky we observe even though the sun is below the horizon.
When there is a high concentration of particles in the atmosphere that are slightly larger than air molecules (like smoke, dust, and pollutants), shorter and intermediate wavelengths of light (violet, blue and yellow) are scattered away.
Red sunsets are often observed from a beach because of the high concentration of salt particles suspended in the air over the oceans.

The red dust reported from NY was most certainly the rose-red "bloom" of aurora when it wasn't at it's most spectacular and the photos from Switzerland look to me like the red aurora display I caught several times during the 29th and 30th here on top of our mountain in upper E..TN.

SPACE.com -- Martian Dust Major Risk to Manned Mission
Compared to here, dust on Mars is thought to be larger and rougher, like the dust that covers the Moon.
One of these rare storms would obviously make it difficult for a spacecraft to land or take off from the planet’s surface, but even smaller storms like the one this past weekend are a substantial mission risk, making atmospheric wind forces the number two mission risk, according to the report.
While dust and wind are two major mission risks, the team of scientists that contributed to NASA’s Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group report believe that future orbiters and robotic missions could help us better understand the planet and reduce these risks.

Mars is heating up - red dust to blame - Breaking News - World - Breaking News
Fluctuating solar radiation is kicking up dust and winds that may be melting the planet's southern polar ice cap, scientists say.
These changes in brightness have been generally attributed to the presence of dust, but until now their effect on wind circulation and climate has not been clear.
By studying changes in light reflected from the surface of Mars - a measure known as an object's albedo - they predict the red planet has warmed by around 0.65 degree Celsius from the 1970s to the 1990s, which may in part have caused the recent retreat of the southern polar ice cap.

Red Dust movie review, In Film Australia
Deriving its title from a description of blood and dirt fusing, Red Dust is a compelling court-room drama set in front of a conundrum of bizarre legal predicaments that perforated the South African justice system in its post-apartheid search for retribution and justice.
Like Terry George’s powerful drama Hotel Rwanda, which depicted powerless UN troops stranded helplessly in heinous circumstances, Red Dust alludes to the sins of prejudice and the mental and physical violence of civil war without aspersing that those intertwined in the devastation will necessarily receive their deserved comeuppance.
The most engrossing attribute of Red Dust is the evolution of the Hendricks character: initially little more than a remorseless, heedless, cold-hard token villain, Hendrick’s arc slowly festers into three frighteningly genuine dimensions, becoming the film’s most tangible and rocking human entity.
