  Red Foley
Red Foley was one of the biggest stars in country during the post-war era, a silky-voiced singer who sold some 25 million records between 1944 and 1965 and whose popularity went far in making country music a viable mainstream commodity.
Foley's pop potential is readily apparent: he has a smooth voice that never wavers or strains, and a mellow approach that stands at odds with the rowdy joshing-around that other country stars strived for at the time.
Blaze Foley (born Michael David Fuller) was raised in West Texas and sang with his mother, brother, and sisters in a gospel act called the Fuller Family.

 Artist Biography - Red Foley
His first chart success came in 1944, when the patriotic wartime song Smoke On The Water was a US pop chart number 7 and a 13-week occupant of the number 1 position in the country charts.
Foley never lost his love for country music and, unlike Eddy Arnold, never sought success as a pop artist, even though many of his recordings did attain pop chart status.
This prompted Hank Jr., seemingly the last person to speak to him, to write and record, as Luke The Drifter, Jr., the tribute narration I Was With Red Foley (The Night He Passed Away), which charted for him in November 1968.

Foley didn’t stay long, though, and went on to work network radio shows such as Avalon Time and Plantation Party at WLW before returning to the National Barn Dance in 1940.
Other hits followed, and Foley was a hot property when he came to Nashville early in 1946 to headline the “Prince Albert Show,” the Grand Ole Opry’s network segment, in the process replacing Roy Acuff, who temporarily left the Opry in a salary dispute.
Among the many hits Foley cut in Nashville are the boogie tune “Tennessee Saturday Night,” “Sugarfoot Rag,” the inspiring gospel song “Peace in the Valley,” and the monster crossover hit “Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy,” which reached #1 on both country and pop charts in 1950.

Straddling these two modern trends was Red Foley, a smooth-voiced but unmistakably Southern crooner whose records maintained a constant presence on country radio from 1946 to 1955.
Foley's genial baritone lent itself well to a variety of styles, from boogie ("Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy") to gospel ("Just a Closer Walk With Thee") to novelties ("Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age," a duet with frequent partner Ernest Tubb) to Bob Wills-style swing ("Hang Your Head in Shame") to flat-out country ("Tennessee Border").
Foley brings a high level of sophistication to each track: its not hard to imagine Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, and Tennessee Ernie Ford going to school on these records.

Billboard.com - Discography - Pat Boone - I Remember Red: A Tribute to Red Foley
Red Foley was Pat Boone's father-in-law, and the pop singer had been married to his daughter 30 years (and Foley had been dead 15) when he cut this collection of his favorite Foley songs on April 14 and 15, 1983.
Boone is more interested in Foley's religious material than his secular songs, though big hits like "Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy" and "Tennessee Saturday Night" are included, sounding somewhat out of place among the more solemn stuff.
Despite the family connection and his own religious convictions, Boone has no particular affinity for the material, which he sings with his usual game engagement, but without much feeling.

As the details of Foley's secret life come to light, the dorm visit has emerged as another in a series of incidents involving Foley and pages that triggered modest concerns but not any alarms.

Foley was gay but did not want to reveal his sexuality because of political considerations.
