MTV | Red Hot Chili Peppers - Profile and Biography
Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show, to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century.
But before the Chili Peppers could begin work on their debut, Flea and Kiedis were dealt a disappointing blow when both Slovak and Irons announced that they were leaving to focus more on another band they were in, What Is This.
While the album was a sizeable hit, it failed to match the success and musical focus of its predecessor, as it became apparent during the album's ensuing tour that Navarro wasn't fitting in as well as originally hoped, and left the band in early 1998.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Album Reviews
The Chili Peppers finally hit their stride with Mother's Milk, for the first time making their breakneck mix of funk, rap, and metal smooth enough to attract the masses, while keeping it raw enough not to alienate old fans.
The polished funk-punk-metal-rap hybrid of later albums was still in its seedling stage here, with the group yet to successfully merge those elements.
As disjointed and occasionally amateurish as this album was, it was also groundbreaking and captured the undivided attention of the rock world.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Album Reviews
Granted, the album is still too long, and the harder rocking tracks are generally less impressive than the melodic mellower moments that fortunately make up the bulk of the album.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers have come a long way since their early jock rock sound, and with songs as strong as the ones on By The Way the band’s gimmicky days of putting socks on their cocks (a cry for attention if there ever was one) are hopefully over.
Quite honestly, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ albums always played more like collections of songs rather than cohesive wholes whose parts could not be interchanged, and the band’s singles have invariably been the best songs on their albums.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: By the Way - PopMatters Music Review
So the Red Hot Chili Peppers turn 40 this year (save guitarist John Frusciante who is 32) and with a veritable laundry list of personal and creative woes over the last 15 years -- nervous breakdowns, drug addiction, death, personnel changes, illnesses, and accidents -- this is no small accomplishment.
John Frusciante has finally confirmed what fans of his three solo albums have known for quite some time, he is a musical talent to be reckoned with and is the undeniable X factor in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' sound.
Sure, the Peppers have taken a risk with their new album, but they have also given themselves a fighting chance at relevancy in 10 years.

One of the most sucessful and influential bands of their generation, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are also one that would evolve over time more than anyone could have ever anticipated, alienating portions of their fanbase over and over again in their relentless pursuit of the future.
Younger folks who find this album puzzling because it bears no relation to the Chili Peppers they started listening to in the mid to late 90s or even in the 2000s need to understand that this album is not an anomaly or a one-off.
The Chilis first became known in LA for their unique fusion of funk, rap, and rock (which was unheard-of in the mid-80's).

These albums are great but that does not mean that Stadium Arcadium is less so because it is so different to the style of the earlier albums.
Do not discount this album because it is different to their others, judge it for its own merits, of which it has many.
This is a Chilis who, now reaching their forties and becoming family men, are evolving from their roots rather than betraying them, as shown on the likes of 'Tell Me Baby' and 'Storm In A Teacup'.

Yet despite all the upheavals, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have retained the optimism and prankish humor that made them alternative rock legends.
Frusciante, who co-composed such Chili Peppers classics as "Give It Away" and "Under the Bridge," left the band in 1992 at the height of their success.
Founded in Hollywood in the early '80s, the Chili Peppers immediately carved a niche by being the first rock band to combine edgy punk attitude with hardcore r&b rhythms.

Since I bought their 2002 album "By The Way," the Red Hot Chili Peppers have gone on to become one of my all-time favourite bands.
Now some fans might say that the Chilis messed up in releasing this greatest hits album in the fall of 2003, but I think it was a wise move to allow newcomers to their music to round up on the past decade.
I'd usually recommend seeking the albums out rather than going after a compilation, in that case I'd recommend "By the Way", which wasn't overflowing with hits, but in my assessment was the best record the band did, but this is certainly as good a place to start.
