Red House Painters are quiet reflective types, and their fans seem to mirror that.
The absence of the chatting socialites was, therefore, noticable during the Red House Painters set.
Since RHP songs tend to be long, and they get even longer when done live, the band played for an hour and forty-five minutes.

Red House Painters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Red House Painters is an alternative rock group formed in 1989 in San Francisco by singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek.
The record was also greatly uncharacteristic of Kozelek (though he was prone to enjoy covering songs by his favorite artists) in that it is the shortest full length to date clocking in at just over thirty minutes.
Even the first Red House Painters album with only six tracks was over forty-five minutes in length.

Red House Painters Biography - AOL Music
Red House Painters was primarily the vehicle of singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek, an evocative, compelling performer of rare emotional intensity.
In 1993, Red House Painters emerged from the studio with over two-dozen new recordings, which they issued on back-to-back eponymously titled albums.
Although Kozelek was the only bandmember to appear on the record, it was nonetheless issued under the Red House Painters name in order to give the group a push as it headed into the second phase of its career.

As much an exercise in self-flagellation as a working band, Red House Painters afforded Ohio-bred, San Francisco-based singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek the latitude to — to paraphrase Mick Jagger's false offer — take his heart in his hand and pour it all over the stage.
The second Red House Painters (distinguished by its sleeve photo of a rural footbridge) returns to the epic song length and sketchy sonic infrastructure of the debut; Kozelek likewise reverts to a more monochromatic outlook.
The final Red House Painters album, Old Ramon, was finished in early 1998 but went unreleased for three years due to label issues.

Red House Painters: Fyfeopedia Music Reviews
San Francisco quartet the Red House Painters (named after Tennesseean painting crew, The International League Of Revolutionary House Painters) made their debut with this record, a release of the demo tapes they auditioned with for 4AD.
Indeed, most of these songs are perfectly enjoyable but as a whole it’s just a hodgepodge of Red House Painters songs and doesn’t stand up as well as their other releases; it’s unambitious, and one gets the feeling that Kozelek could crank out this type of material relatively easily.
The final Red House Painters album was recorded during 1997 and 1998, but wasn’t released until 2001, due to complications arising from label mergers.

Formed in San Francisco in 1989 Red House Painters signed to 4AD Records three years later on the strength of their demo tapes, which were remixed and released as 'Down Colorful Hill' to strong critical praise.
The latest Red House Painters release "Songs for a Blue Guitar" (soon to be released) is a very excellent recording.
The rest of the songs are beautiful and are all Red House Painters, but maybe a bit more twangy at times and maybe a bit more rockin at times and maybe an interesting blend that turns out to be an interesting release by the Red House Painters.

The job of a house painter may seem like something you want to tackle in your “spare time” but in reality the responsibilities of a house painter loom large.
It is true that in its most basic description, house painters apply paint, stain, varnish and other finishes to homes.
Painters will prepare the surfaces to be covered so the paint will adhere properly.

The Red House Painters are blatantly pretentious, asking to be taken seriously or not at all.
Lacking the critical support a band like this would need to get over, the Red House Painters -- who, like many 4AD artists, have always been more popular in Europe than in the US -- are little known here.
The Red House Painters released their first record, Down Colorful Hill, in 1992, when Kozelek was a kid from Ohio working as a night clerk in a San Francisco hotel.

Like much of the Red House Painters' work, OCEAN BEACH is marked by an overriding sense of despair, but Mark Kozelek, the Painters' founder and guiding force, has a way of transforming his melancholia into seduction.
Just as from the beginning of their career, Red House Painters have always created a sense of atmosphere of despair that can't quite be touched upon.

The Red House Painters skirt a thin line between the disparate worlds of drone rock and folky frat rock, as evidenced last Wednesday when the band played at the El Rey Theater.
But despite this billing with an ex-Velvet and the band's use of single-chord songs, the Red House Painters' music bears no relationship to the experimental spirit of V.U. or the school of droney psych that evolved from it.
And in the Painters' live show, they added an uninspired cover of John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" to their set.

The first time I heard the name of RHP is from MCB, the topic was called 'The Celebration Of Losers.' It talks about artists who like writing sad melodies and pessimistic lyrics: Nirvana, Nick Cave, Strangelove, American Music Club, The Smiths, Joy Division and Red House Painters are all on the list.
So its president, Ivo Watts-Russell, changed his taste into country music and turned it to be the mainstream sound for the second generation of 4AD, and to continue his empire.

Red House Painters: Old Ramon - PopMatters Music Review
The year 1998 was not very good for Mark Kozolek and his band The Red House Painters.
However, as luck would have it, during the huge consolidation of the record industry that occurred that year -- a consolidation that saw the creation of what now amounts to one mega-label/distributorship -- the band was dropped and that album ended up in the vault seemingly for good.
The Painters broke up, but Kozolek nonetheless kept himself busy in the time between then and now, releasing a couple of -- again -- critically acclaimed solo albums (including a splendid collection of AC/DC interpretations) and landing a guest spot as Stillwater bass player Larry Fellows in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous.

Before Songs for a Blue Guitar could appear, the Red House Painters' singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Kozelek had to leave his old label 4AD (allegedly over a Kozelek solo album 4AD rejected), split up the band, and find a new home for his music on Supreme Recordings.
This is the solo album Kozelek wanted to make masquerading as the Red House Painters album; no other Painters are listed in the liner notes.
After the release of Throwing Muses' fifth album, Red Heaven, Kristin Hersh, the band's lead singer/songwriter, took a break from the group and issued her first solo album, the acoustic Hips and Makers, in early 1994.
