O'Donnell coat of arms and Family History
Hugh's son was the famous Chief Red Hugh O'Donnell (1571 - 1602), whose youthful abduction was a poignant episode in Irish history.
Major-General Henry Count O'Donnell (a descendant of Calvagh, Chief of Tirconnell) was the founder of the Austrian branch of the family.
Hugh O'Donnell, Chief of Tirconnell and thirty third in line from Connell made his submission to the English Government in 1567 and was knighted by Sir Henry Sidney, the Lord Deputy.

Red Hugh was not satisfied to remain in prison and made his first attempt to escape in 1590, but was recaptured.
Red Hugh, perhaps the most famous of the O'Donnells, was himself inaugurated later that year of 1592, ushering in the last attempt by the clan to preserve the Gaelic order in the north west of Ireland.
Red Hugh fought alongside Hugh O'Neill for the next decade or so, but their rebellion ended in the defeat at Kinsale in the winter of 1601/1602, and Red Hugh died in Simancas in Spain a little over a year later.

 Red Hugh O'Donnell
This was Hugh O'Donnell--"Hugh Roe" or "Red Hugh"--son of the reigning chief of Tyrconnell.
Here the young Red Hugh, with Mac Swyne of the battle-axes, O'Gallagher of Ballyshannon, and some other chiefs, were in the summer of 1587 sojourning a short time in that part to pay their vows of religion; but not without staghounds and implements of chase, having views upon the red deer of Fanad and Innishowen.
Hugh of Dungannon had designs of his own in desiring the freedom of all three; for events to be noted further on had been occurring, and already he was, like a skillful statesman, preparing for future contingencies.

 Hugh Roe O'Donnell
Sir Hugh O'Donnell chief of Tirconnell had a son Hugh, commonly known as Hugh Roe (the Red), who was born in 1572, and who was now--1587--in his fifteenth year.
Next morning O'Donnell was so fatigued that he was not able to keep up with his companions; for the thin shoes he wore had fallen in pieces with wet, and his feet were torn and bleeding from sharp stones and thorns.
On Christmas night, 1591, before supper time, Hugh and his two companions Henry and Art O'Neill, the sons of Shane O'Neill, who were also in the prison, cut through their iron fetters with a file which had somehow been conveyed to them, and let themselves down on the bridge by a long silken rope.

 Cathy O'Donnell at Reel Classics
Cathy O'Donnell radiated the charm of the girl-next-door in a number of first-rate films, but she never quite ingratiated herself into the studio system and as a result, her career slowed to a halt by the end of the 1950s.
O'Donnell has a supporting role as the friend of a young man being held on a theft charge, and in my opinion, this performance is the best of her career -- youthful, innocent, down-to-earth and completely credible.
O'Donnell had a mid-sized role as Barbara Waggoman, Stewart's love interest, and although effective in some moments, at other times her puppy-dog eyes seem out of place amid the intensity of much of the rest of the film.
