Designated Lake County's newest AVA in September 2004, Red Hills sits at the foot of the ancient volcano Mount Konocti, and extends from Big Valley on the west to Excelsior Valley on the east.
The rolling volcanic terrain of the region is in dramatic contrast to the wider valleys and higher mountains of the surrounding viticultural areas of Lake County.
Red Hills lies within the Region III Climatic region, but is not impacted by coastal fog and various marine effects commonly experienced by other growing regions within the North Coast AVA.

Pierre Bottineau was born in 1817 in the Red River Country at Bear Point, near the mouth of the Turtle River.
Red Lake Falls' appreciation has culminated in the establishment of the permanent memorial to Pierre Bottineau in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Joseph's Cemetery in Red Lake Falls was dedicated in August 2000.

The main reason for the battle, as expressed by supporters of a new Red Lake county, was that Crookston, being the county seat of Polk drew all the strength of the county to itself, but rarely did anything of service for the people.
Soon after Red Lake was officially declared a county, the residents of Thief River Falls began a campaign to name their city as the county seat.
Finally, in April of 1905, a petition with 2,006 signatures was presented at the county auditor's office by officials from Thief River Falls in an effort to move the seat to their county.

The Red Lake Watershed District is located in northwestern Minnesota in all of Red Lake County, most of Pennington County, and parts of the following counties: Mahnomen, Polk, Itasca, Marshall, Clearwater, Beltrami, Roseau, and Koochiching.
The Red Lake Watershed District was preceded by a governmental unit known as the Red Lake Drainage and Conservancy District, whose territory included approximately the same land.
The Red Lake Watershed District currently is governed by Minnesota Statutes 103D, which provides a broader scope for a local unit of government to manage quantity and quality of water within the hydrological boundaries.

Red Lake County manages Old Crossing Treaty Park for primitive camping and picnicking.
Old Crossing Treaty Park lies at the confluence of the Red Lake and the Black River and is 13.5 miles (21.8 km) downstream from Red Lake Falls.
This statue is a memorial to the treaty signed in 1863 by the United States and the chiefs, headmen, and warriors of the Red Lake and Pembina Bands of Chippewa Indians, which ceded the Red River Valley to the US.

In 1896 Red Lake County was formed from part of Polk County and in 1910 Pennington County was formed from part of Red Lake County.
